Every year, thousands of entrepreneurs embark on their journey into the business world, and amid doubts, fears, and hopes, I am certain that more than a few of them dream that their fledgling projects might one day become one of the most valuable startups in the world.

We have been monitoring this ranking for quite some time, but with the advent of AI, the landscape of the unicorn startups (those valued at over one billion dollars) is evolving ever more rapidly thanks to countless funding rounds. To provide a clearer perspective on the current situation, let us examine how this ranking stands as of early March 2026:

  1. SpaceX ($1,250,000 million )
  2. OpenAI ($840,000 million)
  3. ByteDance ($550,000 million)
  4. Anthropic ($380,000 million)
  5. Stripe ($159,000 million)
  6. Databricks ($134,000 million)
  7. Binance ($80,000–$90,000 million)
  8. Revolut ($75,000 million)
  9. Shein ($66,000 million)
  10. Canva ($42,000 million)

As you can see, there are many familiar names in this top 10, which is clearly led by SpaceX, the company founded by Elon Musk… Although, as you will see, there is a certain trick in this valuation. Just a few months ago, in October, SpaceX was valued at $425 billion. An astronomical figure, yes, but not enough to surpass the then-table leader, OpenAI, headed by Sam Altman.

However, at the beginning of February, Elon Musk announced the merger of his aerospace company with his artificial intelligence startup, xAI. As a result, the new company’s valuation soared to $1.25 trillion (with a “t”).

Unimaginable.

In any case, the remainder of the ranking has also experienced changes in recent months.

OpenAI vs Anthropic: the great AI duel

OpenAI was the great novelty in the rankings in 2025, in part due to a share buyback program through which employees and former employees sold shares worth $6.6 billion. In this way, the company managed to reach a valuation of $500 billion (approximately €425 billion). Shortly thereafter, in March, the company closed a new funding round worth $110 billion (including $50 billion from Amazon), raising its valuation to $840 billion.

The corporate history of the company is, to say the least, complicated. Until recently, Microsoft was the company’s principal investment partner. In 2023, the technology firm announced an investment of €10 billion in OpenAI in order to integrate its technologies into widely-used tools. Since then, Altman’s company has secured multi-million dollar investment agreements with many other corporations, including Nvidia and Oracle.

In fourth position, and doubling its valuation compared to 2025, we find another major heavyweight of the technology sector, Anthropic, a company founded by former OpenAI employees that specializes in the development of ethical and safe AI. Its flagship model, Claude, competes directly with ChatGPT and has attracted multi-million dollar investments, including those from Amazon and Google. The rivalry between these two companies is such that it has even extended into advertising. Its most recent funding round (to date) took place in February 2026: an additional $30 billion.

There are also unicorn startups outside of AI

This concludes the overwhelming dominance of AI within the list of the world’s most valuable startups, although, they are clearly tied to cutting-edge technological innovation.

Such is the case with ByteDance, founded in 2012 by Zhang Yimin in China, the parent company of TikTok, the leading social network at present. However, its success began with the 2016 launch of its short video app Douyin—the Chinese version of TikTok and its precursor. In 2017, ByteDance acquired Musical.ly, another critical move in the creation of TikTok. ByteDance is also the owner of the popular video editing app Capcut. Its latest valuation, following the spinoff of the TikTok subsidiary for the United States, has reached $550 billion.

Immediately following is Stripe, a powerful fintech headquartered in San Francisco, California (United States) and Dublin (Ireland), whose principal investors include Khosla Ventures, LowercaseCapital, and CapitalG. Stripe specializes in providing payment services to both individuals and businesses, and for some time has expanded its reach beyond eCommerce by offering point-of-sale terminals for brick-and-mortar businesses.

As for the next company, Databricks, it has been a pioneer in creating the Lakehouse platform, which specializes in data engineering, data science, machine learning, and business analytics.

It is followed by Binance, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchange platforms in the world, founded in 2017 by Changpeng Zhao (CZ) in Canada. However, it quickly relocated its operations outside the country due to local regulations. Its flagship product is the Binance Coin (BNB), its native token, which originated on the Ethereum network before migrating to Binance Chain.

Concluding this trio of unicorns in the fintech sector, we have Revolut, one of the companies that has experienced the most growth in recent years. Revolut is no longer just a “travel card”; it has consolidated its position as a global digital bank and financial super-app, reaching a valuation of $75 billion following a share sale at the end of 2025, surpassing many traditional European banks. It boasts over 70 million customers worldwide.

In ninth position is the only representative from eCommerce, the Chinese operator Shein. This fast-fashion company is known worldwide for its low-cost clothing manufactured directly in China. The story of Shein is fascinating, as it has accelerated its growth rapidly to become one of the largest online fashion companies; although, controversy has never stopped following it.

Lastly, maintaining the position it held at the beginning of 2025, the world’s top 10 most valuable startups is rounded out by Canva, with a market value of $42 billion.

Founded in 2012, this company is responsible for the well-known simplified and free graphic design software and website Canva. Its headquarters is located in Surry Hills, Australia. The user-friendliness and democratization of design tools it offers have been key to its success. Moreover, it has recently formed valuable partnerships, integrating with other platforms. More recently, it has joined the AI trend, incorporating new features and tools powered by this technology.
