When we heard people talking about Elon Musk, it’s undeniable that we’re talking about a remarkable individual. A visionary who is set to make a lasting impact on the world. Many refer to him as the real-life Iron Man, and indeed, Musk is an engineer and entrepreneur who seems to never have enough hours in the day to pursue the numerous projects he’s passionate about: from planning trips to Mars with his company SpaceX (focused on space travel) to tackling climate change and human extinction risks.

Elon Musk is someone who doesn’t just let an idea sit on paper.

The Journey of Elon Musk: From South Africa to Present Day

Elon Musk’s story starts on June 28, 1971, in South Africa. He was the eldest child of a South African father who worked in engineering and a Canadian mother who specialized in nutrition. At just 9 years old, Elon received his first personal computer, which ignited his passion for programming and computers, leading him to become a self-taught learner who quickly began exploring on his own.

At 18, driven by a strong dislike for compulsory military service, he left home and, without his father’s support, moved to Canada with his mother to study physics, and later business, at the University of Pennsylvania.

Yet, Musk’s entrepreneurial spirit was strong, and after earning his degree in economics, he chose not to continue his studies. Instead, he began contemplating ideas that could change humanity’s future, foreseeing significant impacts down the line. He was among the first to realize that the Internet would revolutionize the world, and so – in the summer of 1995 – Elon and his brother Kimbal launched their first company: Zip2.

At that time, the Internet was rapidly expanding, and although no one had yet capitalized on this phenomenon, Musk understood the inevitable change. Through determination and effort, Elon eventually amassed wealth through Zip2’s progress: he developed a platform enabling newspapers, magazines, and media outlets (including the prestigious The New York Times) to offer additional commercial services to their clients. In 1999, he sold the company for over $220 million.

That same year, he ventured into electronic payment systems, founding X.com (which was soon rebranded as PayPal), and became its CEO and president. Eventually, eBay acquired the company for $1,650 million.

2002: The Start of the Space Dream

In 2002, already a billionaire, Musk founded SpaceX with the goal of reducing space transportation costs: from a young age, Elon dreamed of exploring Mars.

A year later, in 2003, he founded Tesla Motors, his electric car manufacturing company, where he encountered several conflicts with co-founders, even going to court. By 2008, he took on the roles of CEO and CTO at Tesla.

In 2006, he started a renewable energy company, SolarCity, aiming to make solar energy more affordable. Four years later, in 2010, he ventured into biotechnology with Halcyon Molecular, aiming to sequence the human genome in a minute and extend human life expectancy. Unfortunately, the company shut down in 2012.

2013: Entering a New Phase

A year later, frustrated with the traffic jams in Los Angeles and San Francisco, he conceived Hyperloop One, with the sole purpose of creating technology to connect the two cities with solar-powered tunnels, although he is now working…

In 2016, understanding the high expenses tied to tunnel construction, he established The Boring Company, which, despite its name, is focused on reducing construction costs.

That same year, he also started Neuralink, a nanobiotechnology company aiming to link the human brain with artificial intelligence, which we’ll delve into more later.

Without question, Elon Musk is a born entrepreneur, a brilliant individual with a plethora of ideas and the financial means to explore them all, despite the numerous controversies surrounding him.

Cars, Rockets and Mind Control: The Companies of Elon Musk

This remarkable entrepreneur is constantly striving to innovate across various fields, and regardless of the outcome, his immense drive has led him to establish companies that embark on projects that often leave us speechless. Beyond Tesla and SpaceX, his most well-known ventures, we present a compilation of all the companies founded by the billionaire tycoon:

  • Tesla (2003) Musk’s flagship project, named after the renowned Serbian scientist Nikola Tesla, is famed for its electric vehicles. However, it also deals in home batteries. Musk is currently the CEO and chairman, even though he doesn’t own all its shares.
  • SpaceX (2002) This company aims to revive space exploration, and when unable to purchase rockets, it began producing its own. It has already reached several milestones in the aerospace sector, like reusing the same rocket and launching Starlink, a satellite constellation intended to provide global internet access. It plans its first orbital flight in early 2022.
  • SolarCity (2006) Musk also seeks to shift the global energy model to something more sustainable, and with this company, which sells and distributes solar panels, he is beginning to achieve this, at least in the United States, its primary market.
  • Hyperloop (2012) A novel passenger transport concept using a system that sends capsules through a tube for travel. This system remains costly, so it is currently experimental.
  • OpenAI (2015) Aims to research and develop artificial intelligence that is safe for humans and serves the common good, without being used to harm others. It is the origin of some of today’s most popular AI technologies, like ChatGPT and Dalle-2. Musk left the company’s board in 2018.
  • Neuralink (2016) Seeks to enable the human brain to control devices just by thinking, integrating the brain with AI through software and implants.
  • The Boring Company (2016) This company looks to dig tunnels, an idea both strange and extravagant, as the magnate wants transportation to be faster and cheaper… through these tunnels.

As mentioned, this is a list of companies where Musk acted as a founder. Therefore, we do not include Twitter (2022), Musk’s most publicized acquisition, which has caused him the most headaches so far. We will discuss it later in this article.

Neuralink’s Clinical Trials: The Wearable for Your Mind

One of Musk’s most ambitious ventures is Neuralink, which, as we’ve mentioned, plans to connect the human brain to a computer. According to him, the “wearable for the brain” comprises an implant, numerous micro-wires that link to flexible electrodes, and a system that processes this information.

Certainly, this proposal is not only innovative and revolutionary but partly frightening as well. However, Musk claims that his technology can help treat depression, insomnia, and many other conditions and allow individuals with muscular issues or disabilities to control their movements or operate machines just by thinking about it.

Neuralink received FDA approval to commence human trials. Musk introduced his pioneering project to the world in mid-2020, alongside Gertrude, a pig fitted with his cranial Fitbit: as a device recorded Gertrude’s brain activity, we could hear faint sounds each time she requested food.

Person of the Year 2021

One of Elon Musk’s recent significant achievements was being named Time magazine’s Person of the Year in 2021. This title is an annual recognition given to people who have made a major impact globally.

From Majority Shareholder to Owner of Twitter

In early April 2022, Elon Musk once again captured global headlines by becoming the majority shareholder of Twitter, his favored social media platform. He acquired 73,486,938 shares of Twitter, which accounted for 9.2% of the company.

The announcement caused such a stir that Twitter’s stock soared by 25% in pre-market trading. Although Musk didn’t disclose the purchase price, his stake was estimated to be worth about $3.19 billion (a little more than €2.9 billion), increasing to approximately $3.96 billion (around €3.28 billion) after shares jumped on Monday, April 4.

Just two weeks later, Elon Musk was back in the global spotlight when on Monday, April 25, 2022, he announced the purchase of Twitter for $48.4 billion (a little over €44 billion). The deal was finalized after negotiations from Sunday to Monday. Musk quickly shared his vision for the platform’s future, focusing on six main points:

  1. Twitter will become a private company, thereby exiting the stock market.
  2. The primary aim is to “enhance” free speech, creating a space for open expression.
  3. Tweets will finally be editable.
  4. An open-source Twitter allowing for community-driven changes and improvements.
  5. Account verification through a Twitter Blue subscription.
  6. A reduction in advertising on the platform.

However, Musk surprised everyone on May 13 by tweeting: «Twitter deal temporarily on hold pending details supporting calculation that spam/fake accounts represent less than 5% of users».

The impact was immediate for the social media platform, with its market valuation plummeting by 20% before the New York Stock Exchange opened. Aware of the chaos and the ensuing market disruption of what was soon to be his company, Musk attempted to calm the situation, tweeting a brief message, «still committed to acquisition».

Musk Backs Out of Twitter Agreement

Ultimately, on a fateful July 8, 2022, Musk’s lawyers sent Twitter a letter. In it, they announced the termination of the merger agreement and accused Twitter of breaching the agreement and making false representations that misled Musk, influencing his purchase decisions deceitfully.

This termination, amounting to $48.4 billion, prompted a response from Twitter, of course, via a tweet. In it, Twitter’s board chairman, Bret Taylor, stated that the company remained committed to closing the deal at the agreed price and intended to take legal action to enforce the agreement.

…and Resumes It Shortly After

In early October, Musk’s lawyers sent another letter to Twitter. This time, the content was entirely different, as the tech mogul announced his intention to proceed with the purchase at the original price. A decision motivated by…

Acquisition at the Original Agreed Price. This decision was primarily influenced by the likelihood of losing in court.

Following this decision, Elon Musk officially purchased Twitter on October 28, 2022. He made the announcement with a mysterious tweet saying “the bird is free“.

Right after assuming control, changes were swiftly implemented. One of Musk’s initial actions was to dismiss Parag Agrawal, the CEO of Twitter, Ned Segal, the CFO, and Vijaya Gadde, the head of policies and legal affairs. Musk claimed they misled him and Twitter’s investors about the number of fake accounts on the platform. This decision was expected, as, just days before the acquisition, Musk had entered Twitter’s offices with a sink to symbolize his intention to “clean up the company”.

Another notable shift was in Musk’s perspective on advertising. Initially, he expressed a desire to eliminate ads on the platform but then aimed to transform it into the “most respected advertising platform worldwide.

In May 2023, after conducting an unusual public poll on Twitter, Musk relinquished the position of CEO of Twitter to Linda Yaccarino, former head of advertising at NBC Universal. Despite seemingly enjoying his role as Twitter’s absolute leader and the controversies it brought, he realized the necessity of having someone fully committed to reviving the platform’s lost dynamism.

Frequently in Controversy

Elon Musk is among the top 15 individuals who became billionaires at a young age and is one of the wealthiest people globally, with a net worth exceeding $220 billion (as of June 2023). As evident from his acquisition of Twitter, Musk is no stranger to controversy. Besides being an engineering prodigy, he finds himself drawn to any situation that presents an intellectual challenge.

One notable instance was in 2018 with the Thai cave rescue, where Elon Musk offered technological assistance by proposing a nylon tube be introduced into the cave and inflated to create an underwater tunnel.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1015105500105412610

Ultimately, Musk sent several of his engineers to assist, but after failing to succeed, he resorted to insulting the rescuers on Twitter.

Besides his issues with Tesla Motors, an area of significant concern where he claims to invest over 120 hours of work weekly, Tesla generated very high expectations with production timelines and quotas that were not met. Additionally, his announcement of potentially delisting Tesla from the stock market caused unforeseen reactions in the industry.

In response, the SEC, the US stock market regulatory body, imposed a record fine on Musk for suggesting the withdrawal of Tesla from the open market, surmising that his comments had manipulated the share price. The fine included a $22 million penalty and his resignation as Tesla Chairman for three years, although he maintains his position on the board of directors.

One of his recent controversies involves another tech magnate, Mark Zuckerberg. By now, you might be familiar with the situation: Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, in a mix of jest and seriousness, challenged each other to a bizarre (and absurd, unnecessary, grotesque, testosterone-fueled…) cage match. The root of this rivalry between two of the world’s wealthiest individuals stems from long ago. Years back, Musk criticized Zuckerberg’s optimistic outlook on the future of AI: “his understanding of the subject is limited”.

Their business paths unexpectedly crossed in the social media realm when Elon acquired Twitter. Recently, when Meta announced its intention to launch

When Meta announced plans to introduce a new social network similar to Twitter, the rivalry between the two companies intensified. Elon Musk, known for his quick wit, took jabs at his counterpart in a manner that was characteristically bold.

If it comes to fruition, this clash would undoubtedly be a significant event in Elon Musk’s career.

Regardless of the outcome, it’s clear that Elon Musk is not just in the world to amass wealth but to bring about revolutionary change. This demonstrates the incredible potential of the human mind when it is focused on achieving goals. As previously mentioned, Musk never lets an idea remain just a concept.
