Contrary to what is happening in Europe, Meta has received the approval to train their artificial intelligence with Facebook and Instagram public content from their UK users. It is important to highlight that the content used must have been published by adults.
In their news blog, Meta says: “This means that our generative AI models will reflect British culture, history, and idiom, and that UK companies and institutions will be able to utilise the latest technology. We’re building AI at Meta to reflect the diverse communities around the world and we look forward to launching it in more countries and languages later this year”
We are all familiar with the frequent “hallucinations” that AI has, which is why proper training is so important. As mentioned by Meta, they need human interaction as input in order to develop a system that correctly understands how people interact and generates appropriate responses accordingly.
They will only use public information from users in the United Kingdom who are over 18 years old. Additionally, they will not use information shared in private conversations, but they will use comments and titles of public posts.
Advocating for a transparent process, in the coming days, Instagram and Facebook users in the United Kingdom will receive a notification in the apps of both social networks. This notification will explain what they are doing and provide them with the steps to follow if they do not want their information to be used for training their AI.
This process was paused in July both in the UK and Brazil, but now both of the countries’ authorities have agreed to allow Meta use public content for training their AI. However, in the European Union, is still not allowed.
