ChatGPT Ads will arrive in the EU «starting at the end of this month»

The Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Education plans will continue to be completely free of advertising on ChatGPT.

Honestly, I do not usually read emails with subject lines as generic as “Updates to OpenAI’s Privacy Policy.” But of course, all it takes is a closer look to realize that this seemingly innocuous email, with such an innocuous subject line, was hiding a fairly significant surprise.

ChatGPT ads are about to arrive in the EU more broadly.

ChatGPT advertising reaches free users

Through that announcement, OpenAI has revealed that starting later this month, ads may begin appearing in the Free and Go versions of ChatGPT. Meanwhile, paid plans such as Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Education will remain completely ad-free.

In the email OpenAI sent to its European users, the company explains that during this initial phase, the ads will not be personalized, but will instead be selected solely based on the topic of the conversation being developed and on basic contextual data such as your location or the type of device you use.

In addition, OpenAI states that it will not use chat history or memory to decide which ads to show. Later on, the company will ask users for explicit permission if they wish to enable ad personalization, an option that can be turned on or off at any time in the privacy settings.

From a privacy and user experience standpoint, OpenAI emphasizes that ads will not influence the responses generated by the artificial intelligence and will be clearly differentiated from chat content. The company also guarantees that advertisers will not gain access to private information: “Your personal data and conversations with ChatGPT remain private and are not shared with advertisers. Advertisers do not have access to your chats, your chat history, your memories, or your personal data.”

As a result, brands will only receive general metrics on their campaign performance, such as total impressions or clicks.

A delayed arrival

As we have already told you in a previous article, advertising is not entirely new to ChatGPT. OpenAI began testing it in the United States last February 9, initially among adult users on the Free and Go plans, and has since gradually expanded the model to other markets such as the United Kingdom and Canada. The documentation on how it works is public, and I encourage you to take a look at it to stay up to date on the latest developments 😉 In addition, Sam Altman’s company has been developing the tools needed for its advertising ecosystem to operate, such as an increasingly comprehensive Ad Manager in GPT Ads.

Now it is European users’ turn.
