OpenAI has started introducing the advanced voice feature of ChatGPT on its web platform. This allows users to communicate with the chatbot by speaking, eliminating the need to type prompts.
Initially, this feature is being made available to users with paid subscriptions (Plus, Enterprise, Teams, and Edu), although the company has mentioned plans to extend it to the free version soon.
Kevin Weil, the Chief Product Officer at OpenAI, announced this update in a post on X:
Advanced Voice Mode on the web is being rolled out to ChatGPT paid users this week! We launched Advanced Voice Mode in our iOS and Android apps in September, and recently brought it to our desktop apps (https://t.co/vVRYHXsbPD)—now we’re thrilled to include the web platform. In May 2024, OpenAI introduced GPT-4o, an advanced model designed to incorporate a voice assistant into ChatGPT, initially made available to OpenAI’s partners. Later, in July, access was expanded to selected premium users in the app, and by September, the advanced voice mode was fully launched for Android and iOS apps.
Following this, the feature was also introduced in the desktop version of ChatGPT. The next logical step was its web implementation, which OpenAI has now announced. Over the coming days, subscribers to the Plus, Enterprise, Teams, or Edu plans will be able to have voice interactions with the AI and receive spoken responses from ChatGPT.
Using the advanced voice mode of ChatGPT to have spoken conversations with the AI is straightforward:
Moreover, you can choose from nine different voices, each offering a unique personality and tone:
Weil provided several examples of using the advanced voice mode in his post on X: «I use the voice mode to explore ideas and ask quick questions without typing. Kids love it too: they always ask to “talk to ChatGPT” while we’re driving. I recently used it as a universal translator in Seoul and Tokyo, enabling me to have complete business conversations with people with whom I didn’t share a common language».
