Just one week after announcing its launch in four pilot markets (Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan), OpenAI has begun to roll out globally one of its most highly anticipated features: group chats within ChatGPT. For the first time, artificial intelligence will be able to participate in shared conversations among several people, becoming just another member of the team, whether it be for planning, decision-making, or collaborative creation.
Nevertheless, as with any new feature, it might take some time to reach you: if you do not see this feature, please try restarting the application and ensure that you are using the latest version of the ChatGPT application on Android or iOS.
Therefore, while we are waiting for this rollout to reach everyone, let us address some questions regarding what can be expected from this new functionality:

ChatGPT group chats are presented as a new model of collaboration in which multiple individuals can converse together with artificial intelligence in a single space. The concept is to facilitate shared activities—from planning a trip, deciding on a restaurant, or resolving a disagreement, to working jointly on a creative or academic project—with artificial intelligence acting as a common support for all participants.
To use the new group chats in ChatGPT, the first step is to ensure that you have access to the feature, which is being rolled out progressively for users who are signed in on the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. It is also important to be using the latest version of the application, as the option may not appear if you are using an outdated version.
The process is straightforward: any user may create a group chat from a new or existing conversation and share a link to invite up to 20 people. Each participant sets up a brief profile with a name and photo for identification within the group. The dynamic is powered by GPT-5.1 Auto, which automatically selects the best model to respond based on the situation and the user’s plan.
Within the group, ChatGPT can search for information, analyze files and images, generate content, react with emojis, and even use profile photos to create personalized images. Furthermore, it has been trained in social behaviors to intervene only when it is beneficial and to remain silent when the conversation among humans progresses naturally, although it may also be mentioned directly for an immediate response. It is also capable of adapting to the group environment through custom instructions set by the group’s creator.
With regard to privacy, OpenAI has completely separated these group chats from individual, private conversations. Any personal memory that ChatGPT may have about a user is not utilized within groups, nor does the artificial intelligence generate new memories based on these interactions. Users must accept an invitation before joining, may leave at any time, and have controls to manage artificial intelligence activity and presence.
For enhanced security, if a participant under the age of 18 joins a group, ChatGPT automatically reduces exposure to sensitive content, and parents have the ability to disable this feature through parental controls.
