TikTok has announced that it will shut down its photo-sharing app, TikTok Notes, on May 8. The app, launched in a testing phase in Canada, Australia, and Vietnam last year, was intended to compete with Instagram in the image-focused social media space.
The company is notifying TikTok Notes users about its decision and is redirecting them to Lemon8, another platform owned by ByteDance. This strategy is not surprising, given that both applications offer similar functionalities.
Although TikTok has not provided a specific reason for shutting down TikTok Notes, it is likely that low adoption of the app played a role in this decision. In contrast, Lemon8 has shown significant growth, reaching approximately 12.5 million monthly active users globally as of December 2024.
Lemon8 was launched in Japan in 2020, has since expanded into markets in the United States and Southeast Asia. The app combines elements of Instagram and Pinterest, allowing users to share slideshows and photo collections, and browse content through the “Following” and “For You” feeds. It also offers creative tools such as filters, effects, stickers, and text templates.
Moreover, in November 2024, TikTok enabled integration with Lemon8, allowing users to access the latter directly using their TikTok accounts. This move aims to facilitate the sharing of photo content across both platforms and provide a more cohesive experience for content creators.
The shutdown of TikTok Notes reflects ByteDance’s strategy to consolidate its applications and focus on platforms with greater market traction. Lemon8 emerges as a strong alternative for users interested in sharing photo content, complementing the short-form video experience offered by TikTok.
