Meta seeks to dominate all facets of generative AI, from images to video and, of course, audio. To advance in the latter, the technology giant has just finalized an agreement through which it acquires Play AI, a startup specialized in AI-based voice technology.
According to the information published on its website, Play AI’s mission is to “make the creation of enjoyable conversational AI voice experiences accessible to all businesses, developers, and enthusiasts.”
On its platform, the company offers services to develop AI-powered voice agents that can operate in 30 languages, with low latency, security, and compatibility with on-premises deployments. They state that these agents are capable of transforming customer service and sales outcomes.
The company also features a tool called PlayNote which allows users to create audio from files and data through AI voice synthesis.
The cost of the transaction has not been made public. In fact, the available details have been announced exclusively by the outlet Bloomberg after Meta confirmed the acquisition to them. What has been revealed is that the entire Play AI team will begin working at Meta this week under the supervision of Johan Schalkwyk, who was recently recruited by Meta from the AI voice company Sesame.
“The PlayAI team’s work in creating natural voices, along with a platform for easy voice creation, is a great match for our work and roadmap in AI characters, Meta AI, wearables, and audio content creation,” states Meta’s internal memo accessed by Bloomberg.
The acquisition of Play AI adds to a long list of efforts by Meta to drive a 2025 that Zuckerberg, in January, described as “a defining year for AI”. Indeed, at that time, Meta’s CEO announced projected investments between 60.000 million and 65.000 million dollars in this area to develop AI models and build data centers.
So far in 2025, the technology giant has unveiled important news relating to its AI products, such as: the activation of Meta AI in Europe, the introduction of its multimodal AI Llama 4, and the launch of the revamped version of Meta AI app.
At the structural level, the company has also made significant decisions aimed at focusing on the development of what it calls “AI superintelligence.” It was recently announced that Meta’s AI division has been restructured, resulting in a new unit called Meta Superintelligence Labs that will bring together all teams working on this technology. Alexandr Wang, CEO of Scale AI, has been appointed to lead this division.
In addition, another pillar of Meta’s strategy is talent acquisition. The company has recruited several researchers from OpenAI, one of its main competitors in the field of AI. Some of the most notable names include Trapit Bansal, Shengjia Zhao, Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi, and Hongyu Ren.
