One year and a half after its launch, Meta AI, the digital assistant powered by generative AI from Meta, arrives in Europe. Starting this week, Meta AI will begin to roll out its generative text capabilities on WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger in 41 European countries and another 21 foreign territories.
For the time being, Meta AI will only function as a text chatbot for European users and will not integrate the capabilities to generate or edit images that it does have in other territories like the United States. It will also not be capable of answering questions about the content of a photograph.
However, this is a very positive first step, considering all that we have had to wait to experience the potential of this AI. Meta AI will be able to provide answers to questions using information from the web, offer ideas, help plan a trip, or even show certain types of content in the user’s Instagram Feed.
The tech giant has had to comply with the European regulations on security and privacy in order to launch its product in Europe. In fact, Meta’s plans included launching its AI agent in European territory much earlier, but regulators’ demands slowed down its roadmap.
Ellie Heatrick, spokesperson for Meta, explained: «This launch comes after nearly a year of intense collaboration with various European regulators and, for now, we only offer a text-only model in the region that has not been trained with data from EU users.
We will continue to collaborate with regulators so that European citizens have access to and can adequately benefit from Meta’s AI innovations, which are already available to the rest of the world».
