The pandemic meant an incredible boost for e-commerce and although many experts indicate that this growth is stabilizing, the data on the state of eCommerce in Spain are still favorable, reflecting high levels of growth.
And it is that, according to data from Spanish Government, during the first quarter of 2022, e-commerce in Spain exceeded the figure of 15,600 million euros (just over 16 million dollars). This figure not only represents a 25.3% higher billing than the same period of 2021, but also reflects the highest year-on-year growth since Covid arrived. As the following graph shows, if we add up the income from Spanish eCommerce corresponding to the 4 quarters of 2021, the figure amounts to 57,747 million euros. This represents an increase of 11.7% over the previous year. In 2020, total income exceeded 50,000 million euros for the first time.
The transactions that were made in the first quarter of 2022 are also favorable. There were 312.8 million transactions, an 8.2% growth from the previous year.
When dividing the transactions into economic sectors, it is evident that the leaders in the purchase and sale ranking are restaurants (7.3%). Closely followed by the gambling and betting sector (7.2%) and lastly, clothing (6.1%)
The economic activity that handles the largest volume of business within Spanish eCommerce is clothing (7.3%), a trend that is repeated in several previous quarters.
A sector that has managed to scale with respect to the last quarter of 2021 is travel agencies and tour operators (7%), which has managed to reach second place in the ranking of the largest volume of business. It is necessary to remember that the pandemic meant a hard blow for this economic sector, which before 2020 was always the leader of this list.
For its part, the third, fourth and fifth places on this list are for services auxiliary to financial intermediation (6.1%), air transport (5.3%) and gambling and betting (4.4%).
Likewise, in recovery, we can highlight the appearance of the branch of activity of restaurants (3.3%), which returns to occupy a place in the list after having been absent the previous quarter.
Let’s now comment on the volume of business presented by transactions made in Spain and directed towards foreigners, which reach the figure of 9,028 million euros (9,265 million dollars). This represents a growth of 15.2% with respect to the quarter of 2021. It should be noted that 90.9% of purchases made from Spain for export are made in businesses located in the European Union.
As for the economic sectors with the highest volume of business from Spain to abroad, they are: clothing (10.3%), auxiliary services to financial intermediation (10.1%) and air transport (5.6%).
Leading the way in the ranking, we find the heavyweights of global eCommerce: Amazon and AliExpress, leaders in billing, number of orders and visits.
Amazon has an undisputed advantage as Spain’s number 1 eCommerce, with billing of 8,429,779,289 euros (more than 8.6 billion dollars), which triples the billing of AliExpress of 3,041,840,374 euros (more than 3.1 billion dollars). The latter’s growth has been 42.8% compared to 2020.
