The AI Overviews were just the beginning. After successfully integrating its text-generating AI into search, Google is now working towards achieving the same with Audio Overviews. This is an AI-powered feature capable of generating audio summaries for certain queries.
The Audio Overviews are not a newly created technology by Google; they were first introduced in Notebook LM in September 2024, and have since been the foundation of their podcast-format audio used to summarize documents. Furthermore, in March of this year, the company integrated this functionality into Gemini.
The tech giant has announced that it is testing Audio Overviews in Google Labs, its program for testing search features and experiences, and provides the option to request access to the experiment.
The Audio Overviews for search use the latest Gemini models to generate conversational audios quickly. According to what has been stated by Google, «when our systems determine it could be useful, you will see the option on the search results page to generate a brief audio summary of the subject of your query».
The audio overviews display a player with play and pause buttons, volume and playback speed adjustments. Additionally, this includes a list of links to the sources from which the AI has extracted the information to generate the Audio Overview.
To be able to gather useful feedback from users testing the Audio Overviews in Labs, Google has activated an option that allows users to rate each audio overview with a thumbs up or thumbs down.
