Amazon has announced the launch of FBM Ship+, a new logistics management program for shipments managed directly by sellers (FBM). This program is being introduced as a tool designed to enhance the competitiveness of international sellers who make shipments from China, and it has been activated in key markets across Europe, the United States, and Japan.
FBM Ship+ (derived from Fulfilled by Merchant Ship+) is a solution that allows sellers operating under the FBM model to offer their customers expedited shipping options at significantly reduced prices. Traditionally, the main disadvantage of the FBM model compared to FBA (in which shipments are managed by Amazon itself) has been the slower delivery speeds and the inconsistency in estimated shipping times. Expedited shipping is expensive, and those costs often erode the seller’s profit margins, especially for cross-border shipments.
Amazon addresses this by leveraging its negotiation capacity with affiliated carriers and its advanced tracking technology. By enrolling in the program, the seller is able to display faster and more accurate delivery dates for their listings to customers.
As the company explains, “Once you have registered, customers will see accurate and fast delivery dates, making your offers more attractive and generally increasing your sales. FBM Ship+ makes expedited shipping more affordable than ever, as we provide reimbursements to cover the costs of the faster shipping. The more you ship, the more you will recover. In addition, you will enhance your account’s status protection and protection from claims related to late deliveries, provided you ship on time.”
The mechanism that enables Amazon to offer reduced shipping rates and reimbursements lies in the tool “Buy Shipping from Amazon” (Buy Shipping). This platform centralizes the acquisition of shipping labels that are affixed to packages. In order to participate in FBM Ship+, the seller is required to purchase these labels through this internal Amazon system.
Why is this significant? By using Buy Shipping, the seller is accessing negotiated rates that Amazon has secured with selected carriers, such as Yun Express for shipping routes originating in China. Additionally, it enables Amazon to monitor shipment performance and quality from the initial scan. In this way, Amazon ensures that the expedited shipping service is reliable before granting the reimbursement. If the label is acquired outside of this system, the seller will not be eligible for the program’s benefits.
The acquisition of labels is flexible. Sellers may purchase them directly through the Order Management page on Seller Central, or via enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems or multichannel integrators. This centralized system also facilitates the monitoring of carrier performance and the validation of prompt deliveries prior to approving reimbursements.
In addition to simply offering cheaper shipping rates (which it also does), the program introduces a reimbursement system to cover a substantial portion of the cost associated with expedited shipping.
To access this benefit, the seller must meet two crucial requirements:
If the seller fulfills these conditions, the reimbursement is automatically deposited into their Seller Central account balance. However, if the package is shipped even one day late, the seller forfeits the right to this reimbursement, underscoring the importance of efficiency.
In addition to clear cost savings and improved delivery speeds, FBM Ship+ offers sellers a range of protective benefits. By using Amazon’s labels and complying with the shipping deadline, the seller receives enhanced protection against claims under the A-to-Z Guarantee and an additional shield to protect their account status from negative metrics related to late deliveries.
As you can imagine, FBM Ship+ presents itself as an especially valuable tool for cross-border sellers (primarily those shipping from China) who operate in the markets of the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Japan. It is ideal for those seeking to offer an expedited delivery experience, increase their competitiveness, and maintain the flexibility to manage their inventory from their own origin warehouse.
