Liverpool Mexico is one of the most popular eCommerce stores in the country, but it is also the pioneer department store in the retail industry in the country. Since its founding in October 1847, it has been adapting over time to new trends, fashions and technologies to offer a pleasant experience to its customers and products that are of interest to them and satisfy their needs.
The company began thanks to Jean-Baptiste Ebrard, who sold ribbons, laces and lace in a trunk in downtown Mexico City. As time went by, Ebrard decided to sell other products such as clothing, so he began to buy merchandise in Europe and shipped it to Mexico through the Port of Liverpool, hence the name of the department store.
The original owner of Liverpool died in 1895 while he was in France, so the company passed into the hands of a group of French partners who took advantage of the popularity that the project had already gained to continue expanding it and thus establish it in a store instead of continuing to be a trunk. Little by little they opened several branches and by 1936 they acquired a building they called Liverpool Centro, which to this day is located on 20 de noviembre Avenue in Mexico City and had the first escalators in the capital.
Since then, El Puerto de Liverpool has sought every opportunity to continue growing. Although its department stores bore (and still bear) the name Liverpool, the company acquired others and let the stores keep their original names. The company, which was under the command of the French, acquired the Fábricas de Francia stores and stores in 1988, then, by 1997, it managed to acquire Comercial Las Galas and a year later it acquired Tiendas Departamentales Salinas y Rocha.
Today, El Puerto de Liverpool has 113 department stores in at least 30 states in Mexico. Of those stores, 80 are tiendas Liverpool, 29 are Fábricas de Francia and 4 are Duty Free. In addition, Liverpool was one of the first companies to accept purchases under credit and has its own card that can be used at any merchant worldwide.
By 2015, Liverpool’s website began to attract attention. Although they already had a website, it was relaunched to offer users a more intuitive navigation on all devices, a better payment process that accepts Liverpool Card, credit and debit cards, PayPal, wire transfer and cash payment in some physical stores. Liverpool’s eCommerce offers more than 1 million different products in the categories of women’s, men’s and children’s clothing. You can also find cosmetics, furniture, home, multimedia, toys, kitchen, sports, books and more.
With the Covid-19 pandemic, Liverpool was forced to look for ways to meet customer demand in online sales, so in 2020 it decided to include an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system in its eCommerce to be able to fulfill all orders. It also began using Google Cloud to optimize inventory management and interaction among its collaborators. In 2021 Liverpool announced that it would invest US$390 million to create a new distribution center that will allow it to have more inventory and deliver faster thanks to an advantageous location north of Mexico City.
Its global sales reached 200 million dollars (MDD) during 2021; fashion being its star category (again). In the country’s online market, it had a 5% share.
During the fourth quarter of 2022, digital participation of online channel sales was 24.4%. Cumulatively, there is a 23.0% participation, 50 basis points higher than the same period of the previous year. The number of SKUs on this digital platform grew 46% during the period, while new customers increased by 35% compared to the previous year. Regarding the use of their app, Liverpool Pocket, in the fourth quarter there were 45% more downloads than in the same period of the previous year, reaching an increase of 42% in active users, , also compared to 2021. These figures reflect progress in terms of the Group’s omnichannel strategy.
