Temu, the low-cost marketplace of Chinese origin, has fulfilled what it promised earlier this year and now allows sellers from the European Union to market their products on the platform. However, at this time, it is necessary to receive an invitation in order to begin operating on the marketplace.
Temu, owned by the Chinese eCommerce giant Pinduoduo, was launched in the United States in September 2022 and quickly gained popularity thanks to its low prices and aggressive promotions. It entered the european market in 2023, after oppening their office in Ireland. Temu is part of the Very Large Online Companies (VLOP), meaning that they have to meet several and strict requirements of the Digital Service Act. However, until recently, this marketplace only offered products from its more than 100,000 sellers based in China.
The paradigm shifted in March 2024 when Temu opened its doors to selected U.S. sellers. Unlike Chinese sellers, who ship their products to Temu’s warehouses, these merchants are responsible for fulfillment from their own warehouses—a model that has now been extended to the European Union.
Zixia Yi, Business Development Manager at Temu, explained on her LinkedIn profile that the marketplace is now “officially open for the registration of businesses with entities in the EU, including those based in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.”
However, although it is now possible to access the seller center, only those businesses or merchants who receive an invitation will be able to start selling their products on the marketplace.
According to data from the marketplace itself, Temu has 213 million unique monthly visitors. This, combined with its growing popularity that has allowed it to compete with giants like Amazon, makes it an attractive showcase for brands.
Additionally, Temu has designed its conditions for sellers with the goal of being an appealing proposition. To begin with, the marketplace does not impose any entry fees, monthly fees, or advertising charges, meaning the cost of selling on its platform is €0
Temu’s conditions for European sellers
Temu promises its future European sellers that it will handle promotion and advertising, providing free marketing services both within and outside the marketplace. It also offers comprehensive, multilingual customer service and seller support. However, Temu will be the one to set the prices of the products, although the seller can establish a base price.
Meanwhile, the creation of product listings, storage and inventory management, as well as order shipments and returns, will be the responsibility of the merchant.
