Meet “Personal Intelligence” from Gemini, a feature that connects Google apps to enhance responses

With a single click, you can link Gmail, YouTube, Google Photos, Search, Calendar, and any other application to train and personalize your AI.

This is how things stand now: a new day brings yet another development in the field of artificial intelligence. Today, the topic of discussion is Gemini, Google’s AI system, which has just incorporated “Personal Intelligence”, a feature that connects all Google apps to personalize and enhance responses.

At present, this feature is available only to eligible users in the United States who have Google AI Pro and AI Ultra accounts, but its availability will gradually expand to additional regions and users.

What Personal Intelligence is and how it works

The new “Personal Intelligence” feature in Gemini enhances the user experience by connecting Google applications in a streamlined and secure manner, allowing the AI to personalize responses and tasks according to your daily life.

With a single tap, you may link applications such as Gmail, YouTube, Google Photos, Search, Calendar, and more. By doing so, Gemini accesses the information from each of these apps in order to answer your inquiries and perform more complex tasks, such as providing specific details from an email or extracting data from a photo. You retain full control over which applications to connect and may disable them or modify the settings at any time.

The Vice President of Google Labs and Google Gemini, Josh Woodward, explains it with a personal example: “We needed new tires for our 2019 Honda minivan two weeks ago. While waiting in line at the repair shop, I realized I did not know the tire size. I asked Gemini. At present, any chatbot can find these tire specifications, but Gemini went further. It suggested various options: one for everyday driving and another for any weather condition, referencing our family road trips to Oklahoma located in Google Photos. Then, it carefully pulled the ratings and prices for each. When I reached the service desk, I needed our license plate number. Rather than searching for it or leaving the line to return to the parking lot, I asked Gemini. It extracted the seven-digit number from a photo in Photos and also helped me identify the specific model of the minivan by searching in Gmail. Just like that, we were ready.”

Additionally, Woodward explained that with the new Personal Intelligence, Gemini also gave him book, series, clothing, travel recommendations, and tips based on very specific information obtained from family photos.

How to access Personal Intelligence

For the time being, this feature is in beta format for eligible users of Google AI Pro and AI Ultra in the United States (personal accounts only, not available for Workspace Business, Enterprise, or Education users). Soon, it will also be available in the AI Mode of Search. Once the testing period concludes, the company intends to expand it to additional countries and to the free plan.

Selected users will be able to see an invitation to try this feature on the Gemini home screen. They may also activate it by following these steps:

  • Open Gemini and navigate to Settings
  • Select the “Personal Intelligence” option
  • Select the connected applications to include (Gmail, Photos, etc.)

Once activated, it functions on the Web, Android, and iOS, and with all models within the Gemini model selector.

Personal Intelligence and privacy

When you choose to activate this feature, Gemini accesses your data in order to carry out tasks and respond to specific requests. This data, which is already securely stored within Google, does not need to be sent to any external sites to personalize your experience.

If information from your connected applications is utilized, Gemini will attempt to explain or reference it so you may verify its source. If you are dissatisfied with a response or if it is incorrect, you may correct it in the chat itself (for example, by stating “Please remember, I prefer window seats”) or generate new responses without personalization by using temporary chats.

Regarding model training, Personal Intelligence does not use your Gmail emails or Google Photos images; instead, it relies on direct interactions, such as your prompts and the responses generated, after filtering out personal data. For instance, if you request a license plate number, Gemini does not learn your license plate number; instead, it understands that when you request it, it can locate such information in connected photos or emails.

Some limitations

As this feature is still in the testing phase, Google warns that users may encounter inaccurate responses or experience “over-personalization,” a phenomenon in which Gemini establishes connections between topics that are unrelated. Additionally, it may struggle to grasp the pace or subtleties of complex situations, such as changes in personal relationships, including divorces, or users’ multiple interests.

In such cases, users are encouraged to provide feedback to help improve the system’s accuracy. “For example, seeing hundreds of your photos on a golf course may lead it to assume you love golf. However, it misses the nuance: you do not enjoy golf, but you love your child, and that is why you are there. If Gemini makes a mistake, you may simply tell it ‘I do not like golf,’” explains Woodward.
