Just one day after OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Shopping Research, Perplexity and Copilot—two other major names in the world of artificial intelligence—have announced their own updates regarding the shopping experience on their platforms. The timing selected by these companies is not accidental; it is intended to leverage the increase in users’ purchasing intent driven by Black Friday and the holiday season campaigns to achieve greater adoption of these new features.
The new shopping experience from Perplexity is based on the platform’s own conversational search capability. It can utilize conversation history to filter more personalized results and enables the completion of a purchase through its Instant Buy feature, made possible by the partnership with PayPal.
As Perplexity explains in its statement: “AI assistants work best when they adapt to users, rather than replace them. They understand users’ intent, remember their preferences, and act as extensions of how users themselves would approach a task.”

Regarding the way Perplexity’s shopping experience presents research results, the AI generates product cards that highlight key information, specifications, and reviews. In addition, the platform will also label items from sellers partnered with PayPal with the “Instant Buy” button, thus indicating that users can make an instant purchase without leaving the platform in a fast and secure manner. After payment has been completed, it will be possible to continue the conversation and explore additional products.
Perplexity emphasizes that a consumer who follows its conversational and personalized purchase flow demonstrates a higher intent to buy. Furthermore, it states that its instant payment feature, being a quick and seamless experience, reduces the likelihood of cart abandonment.
Additionally, they state: “Thanks to our collaboration with PayPal, retailers remain at the center of the transaction as registered merchants. They have full visibility into who their customer is, they can process returns, build loyalty, and manage the post-purchase relationship just as they would on their own websites.”
At present, the Perplexity shopping experience is available only in the United States, where it has been rolled out free of charge for all users on desktop and web platforms. The company plans to expand this feature to iOS and Android devices within the country in the coming weeks, but it has not provided any information about its activation in other regions.
Microsoft has incorporated various shopping features into Copilot, its AI integrated into the Edge browser. These include rebate capabilities, price comparisons, price history, product information, and price tracking. Additionally, Copilot Mode in Edge will be able to proactively display rebate and savings offers.

While browsing the website of a compatible eCommerce, users may click on the Copilot icon (located in the upper right corner of the browser) to access the new shopping experience. This way, the AI will provide relevant product information, comparisons with offers from other retailers, the price history of the item, or a comprehensive product analysis.
Moreover, Copilot is conversational, so the user can ask questions in order to obtain the precise information they desire. The tool also provides the option to set up price alerts, allowing the user to receive a notification if the product’s price drops. The purpose of this assistant is to help consumers save not only time but also money on their purchases, offering them ways to verify offers and thus providing greater confidence in the shopping experience.
Unfortunately, as in the case with Perplexity, these updates have only been activated in Edge in the United States. This grants a notable advantage to the shopping research feature of ChatGPT, which has been rolled out globally for users subscribed to the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, both in the mobile version and on the web.
