OpenAI has launched o3-pro, its most capable model to date. Here we have a new AI that is the best of the best, well… at least it will be until OpenAI decides to release the next model which will be the best of the best of the best.
However, it is true that o3-pro presents advancements in terms of analysis and reasoning capabilities, standing out as the most suitable option if you seek to answer complex questions or require support in tasks involving deep thinking. Nonetheless, this model also has its drawbacks, such as its incompatibility with image generation.

The users of the Pro and Team plans for ChatGPT can now enjoy o3-pro, which has replaced o1-pro in the model selector. Likewise, OpenAI has announced that this new AI will be activated in the Enterprise and Edu plans next week. It is also available via the API.
o3-pro is the evolution of o3, an advanced reasoning model that was introduced in December 2024 and released to the market earlier this year. Like its predecessor, o3-pro offers memory capabilities, can access the Internet for searches, analyze files, reason about visual inputs, utilize Python, and so on.
As an advanced reasoning AI, o3-pro can break down, analyze, and solve problems step-by-step, demonstrating a deeper understanding of the information. This capability also allows it to identify patterns and learn from its interactions.
o3-pro has taken over from the o1-pro model, the most powerful version of o1, the model prior to o3. Yes, I know, it is a family tree as complicated as that of the Targaryens, everyone has similar names, and the relationships are at least confusing.
The fact is that, OpenAI has explained that, “since its launch, o1-pro has been the preferred model for users in areas such as mathematics, sciences, and programming, areas in which o3-pro continues to excel, as academic evaluations demonstrate”. Therefore, if you were using o1-pro, you should now choose o3-pro and enjoy its improved performance.
Although the developer warns that: “thanks to o3-pro having access to tools, responses usually take longer to complete than those from o1-pro. We recommend using it for complex questions where reliability is more important than speed, and the wait of a few minutes is worth the sacrifice”.
According to the evaluations published by OpenAI, o3-pro surpasses both o1-pro and o3 in all analyzed areas: science, writing, programming, education, business, mathematics, etc.
However, no one is perfect, not even OpenAI’s most powerful AI. The developer has informed that image generation capabilities are not integrated into o3-pro. Therefore, if you want to create an image with AI from ChatGPT, we recommend selecting the model GPT-4o.
You will also not be able to use the Canvas mode, the collaborative interface that facilitates more active and dynamic assistance by the AI.
Another matter to consider when using o3-pro is the fact that, for now, temporary chats are disabled due to certain technical complications that OpenAI hopes to resolve soon. This means all your conversations will be recorded.
