Last night the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers in the final game of the National Football League, better known as the Super Bowl. However, it is not about game tactics that we are going to talk about in this article, but about one of the most emblematic parts (with permission to the halftime show) of this globally famous sporting event: the commercials aired during the game.

Millions of people watch this game every year. Last year it reached a record 115.1 million viewers according to Nielsen data, which makes the SuperBowl a coveted showcase for big brands, which this year have paid up to 7 million dollars for 30-second spots. Let’s find out which were the best pieces of this edition.

CeraVe

Who does not love intelligent puns? “Michael CeraVe”, was the piece created by the agency Ogilvy for the advertising insertion of the skin care brand CeraVe. This spot stars the actor Michael Cera, a well-known face in Hollywood who has also played an important role in the top-grossing movie of 2023: Barbie. The character is a great success, who exudes humor and sympathy in an ad in which the celebrity declares to be the creator of CeraVe, while referring to clichés of cosmetic advertising and even communicates with a narwhal.

The spot culminates by revealing that all of the above was a piece created by the actor “it would be great if people thought I did this“, under the skeptical gaze of the brand’s expert dermatologists. Here is the extended version of the ad aired at the SuperBowl.

Likewise, to continue with the narrative, CeraVe has published several posts in his networks in a humorous way, dissociating himself from his relationship with Michael Cera.

Deadpool 3

Marvel has unveiled the trailer for “Deadpool 3” (retitled “Deadpool & Wolverine”). The highly anticipated installment will continue the story of the eccentric and shameless superhero, introducing the iconic Wolverine and presenting him with new challenges.

Also, we could see how Hugh Jackman, the actor who interprets Wolverine, uploaded a photo to his instagram profile, showing the rivalry between both characters calling Deadpool an “asshole”.

Doritos

The snack brand presented a fun spot advertising its Doritos Dinamita.

We can see the actress, Jenna Ortega, in the supermarket shopping with her grandmothers, named Dina and Mita. When Ortega’s character leaves them alone to go get a product she has forgotten, the two women notice a bag of Doritos Dinamita, the last one left, but a guy is faster than them and takes it away. That is when both of them start a mad chase, worthy of any self-respecting action movie, to get their hands on the snack.

Dove

Dove’s spot is an ode to all those failures, falls or blows that make up the sporting evolution and without which there would be no progress or improvement. Likewise, the brand reaffirms the fact that it is not these blows that cause girls to abandon sports, but the low self-esteem about their physical appearance, a problem that causes 45% of girls to stop practicing sports at the age of 14.

Google Pixel 8

Google is a regular at the SuperBowl ad break, and this year it wanted to put the spotlight on the accessibility capabilities of its Google Pixel 8 through a piece made by the agency Gut Miami and Google Creative Lab titled “Javier in Frame”.

The spot has been directed by blind filmmaker Adam Morse and shows the operation of “Guided Frame”, a function that helps blind or visually impaired people to take pictures, giving them indications when taking the photo.

Despicable Me 4

Another movie that has been promoted at the SuperBowl has been “Despicable Me”. A small teaser that winks at the fever of image-generating AI and its “professional” uses, while picking up the essence of the protagonist’s charismatic little yellow minions.

Hellmann’s

And we meet again one of the actresses who had an important role in Barbie, none other than Kate McKinnon. In this cute ad, her character is wondering aloud what she will cook with the few ingredients she has, when her cat gives her the answer meowing “mayo”, which she interprets as, of course, Hellmann’s Mayo-nnaise. A revelation that will end up leading that cat to stardom.

Oreo

This ad shows us different historical moments in which the protagonists decide to gamble their future by throwing half an oreo with cream in the air, as if it were a heads or tails game. An original idea that makes it clear that decisions should not always be left to chance.

Uber Eats

Uber Eats wanted to remind its customers of all the possibilities offered by its service… that may mean forgetting other things. As Jennifer Anniston says, “to remember something, you have to forget something else“. An idea that leads to humorous situations and a bit of chaos, which also affects other celebrities in the spot, such as Victoria Beckham and David Beckham.

However, it should be noted that one of the situations shown in the ad was not to everyone’s liking, causing it to be removed from the piece subsequently published on networks by Uber. It involved a scene in which a man suffered an allergic outbreak from eating peanut butter (having forgotten that he is allergic). Several viewers, as well as the Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), have criticized making humor out of something that can cause death for allergy sufferers.

Verizon

The telecommunications and broadband company demonstrates in its spot that not even Beyoncé’s virality can slow down your internet… no matter how hard you try.
