Google has just announced a massive update for AI Mode in Chrome, integrating it directly into the browser and sparing you the need to constantly switch between tabs.
I have a colleague who typically has 73 tabs open on his screen (greetings to him). I can’t even wrap my head around that; it’s just completely overwhelming to me. I’ve always lived by the “organized chaos” rule when my mom told me to tidy up my room. It worked back then. But keeping a million tabs open? I just can’t do it.
This launch is specifically designed to end the endless search for information and to enable a much smoother browsing experience.
The main change is the new split-screen interface. From now on, in Chrome’s desktop AI Mode, when you click on a link, the webpage will open alongside the AI panel, rather than replacing it or redirecting you to another window.
For example: imagine a user is searching for a coffee machine that will fit in a 30-square-meter apartment but is also capable of making barista-style lattes, which are currently very trendy. The AI offers several options; the user clicks on a store and, instantly, the retailer’s website appears on the left while the AI remains to the right.
This is when the user can directly ask: “Is this particular model easy to clean?” The AI will analyze the context of that specific page, along with the website as a whole, to respond without requiring the customer to leave the site. This reduces friction during the consideration phase and, honestly, spares us from the headache of copying and pasting technical specifications from one place to another.
But Google has not stopped there. The new update allows you to mix content. Now, you can select tabs you already have open, images, or even PDF files and “feed” them to AI Mode in order to make complex queries.
Essentially, this turns your browser into a command center, where the AI understands not only what you are searching for now, but also what you were already reading.
The update also incorporates creative tools such as Canvas (for idea organization) and AI-based image generation directly accessible from the “plus” menu in the search bar or within AI Mode. Chrome is no longer simply a page viewer but is becoming a fully integrated productivity suite.
From a marketing perspective, this move by Google seeks to retain users within its ecosystem. By enabling AI to “read” pages alongside users, Google is becoming the ultimate information filter.
Positive aspect: It facilitates informed and rapid purchasing decisions.
However, this also presents a challenge: brands must optimize their content to ensure it is easily “digestible” for these AI models, which now act as real-time copilots throughout the browsing experience.
Currently, these features are available in the United States, but Google has already confirmed the rollout will be global. I genuinely hope that now, my colleague will prefer a more organized approach to searching the internet, rather than keeping 73 tabs open at once.
