How many posts should you post on Instagram to grow your account

A study by Buffer asserts that making between 3 and 5 posts per week can more than double the follower growth rate.

Do you wish to grow on Instagram in 2025? Then take note of this key fact: posting between 3 and 5 times a week is the sweet spot that will maximize your reach and growth without exhausting yourself in the process. Should you feel ambitious and choose to go further, reaching up to 10 posts weekly can quintuple your growth rate… provided that you are able to maintain quality.

This statement is not merely an opinion; it is supported by data. An analysis of more than 2 million posts from over 100,000 Instagram accounts conducted by Buffer revealed that the more you post, the better your results will be. However, be cautious—more is not always synonymous with better. It is also essential to consider something highly important: your energy, your time… and your peace of mind.

The perfect number: posting between 3 and 5 times per week

According to the study, publishing between 3 and 5 times per week can more than double your follower growth rate when compared to posting only once or twice per week. Additionally, it could increase your reach per post by approximately 12% compared to your baseline value.

The analysis considered photos, reels, and carousels as samples, but stories were excluded, as they are not ideal for reaching new audiences. Other variables such as the best time to post on Instagram or the best post format for each objective were also not considered, though this does not diminish the significance of the findings.

Now, does posting more than 5 times further increase your reach? Yes, but the performance is not as significant as moving from one or two to five posts weekly. Posting between 6 and 9 times per week may produce an increase of nearly 3.7 times in follower growth rate (0.44%) compared to posting between 1 and 2 times per week. Posting 10 or more times per week could mean an increase of approximately 5.5 times (0.66%). These percentages are much lower than the previously mentioned 12%. Therefore, the extra effort may not be worthwhile.

At the other extreme, posting less than once or twice a week may result in the stagnation of your account or even a decrease in followers.

The main conclusions of the study are as follows:

  • 1–2 posts/week: ideal if you only wish to remain active.
  • 3–5 posts/week: optimal for sustainable growth.
  • 6–9+ posts/week: for those aiming for maximum impact (and are able to manage it).
  • 10+ posts/week: the highest level, but beware of burnout.

How posting frequency affects growth on Instagram

These are the 5 considerations you must keep in mind when planning your posts on Instagram:

1. More weekly posts mean more growth

Posting more on Instagram causes your account to grow at a faster pace. Buffer’s analysis displayed a clear positive correlation between the number of weekly posts and follower growth. Specifically, accounts posting between 6 and 9 times per week grew 3.7 times faster than those posting only once or twice, and those posting more than 10 times accelerated growth up to 5.5 times more.

Do not fall into the trap of thinking that simply posting frequently will guarantee massive results: this statistic reflects a general trend, but it does not distinguish between large or small accounts. Large accounts tend to grow more quickly on their own, even with fewer posts. For this reason, the most useful approach is to compare each account to its own metrics.

2. Not posting at all could mean a loss of followers

This is a fact: if you do not post, you lose. Or at minimum, you fail to gain. The study detected a decline in follower growth when accounts failed to post for a week. This was referred to as the “no-posting penalty.”

A week without posts could mean performance drops 0.08 below the average growth rate for that account. What does that mean in plain terms? If your typical growth is flat, you may begin to see an actual decline in followers. If you had been maintaining positive momentum, such a pause could break the trend. Even if you experience a particularly busy week, strive to share at least one or two posts.

3. Regular posting drives real, measurable growth

It is not simply a matter of posting frequently one week and then disappearing the next, but of planning a pace you can sustain over time.

The data indicate that even a minor increase in frequency brings benefits:

  • Moving from no posts to 1–2 per week = +0.12% growth rate
  • Increasing to 3–5 posts/week = +0.26%
  • Raising to 6–9 = +0.44%
  • And more than 10 = +0.66%

What stands out is that this calculation compares each account to itself, not to others, which ensures the reliability of the results.

4. More consistent posting increases weekly reach

This conclusion may seem intuitive, but now it is supported by data: the more you post, the more people will view your content. You are not merely increasing the number of posts, but the total reach over the week.

This occurs because each new post represents an additional opportunity to appear in your followers’ feeds, on the explore page, or in the Reels carousel. Furthermore, since Instagram no longer orders content chronologically, there is no risk that your posts will compete against each other. The algorithm distributes them effectively.

Therefore, more posts = more visibility, without fear of “overwhelming” your followers.

5. Posting more means increased reach per post

Finally, the study concludes that increasing your posting frequency not only results in greater overall reach, but it also enhances the individual impact of each post.

Compared to those who post only once or twice weekly, those posting:

  • 3 to 5 times achieve 12% more reach per post.
  • 6 to 9 times experience an 18% increase.
  • More than 10 times, reach up to 24% more.

This demonstrates that Instagram’s algorithm rewards sustained activity, though with diminishing returns: each additional post yields slightly less than the previous one. This is why it is so critical to find an equilibrium between quantity and quality.

Quality versus quantity: the eternal dilemma

While the numbers may encourage you to post as if there were no tomorrow, there is one principle you must not overlook: quality remains paramount. A poorly crafted post, created in haste, will likely not earn you many new followers… and may even be detrimental.

Therefore, here is our golden advice: identify a posting frequency that allows you to consistently produce quality content. If this means three posts weekly, that is excellent. If you can manage six without becoming overwhelmed, that is wonderful. However, do not set unattainable goals merely to boost your statistics. It is better to progress slowly but steadily (with carefully crafted captions—or outstanding reels).
