Google has commenced rolling out Discover, its news section based on the user’s interests, on the desktop version of the search engine in Australia and New Zealand. Until now, Google Discover only displayed results in mobile browsing.
Google gives with one hand and takes with the other. Although AI Overviews, the AI-generated views by Google, are causing a decrease in organic CTR for websites, now the arrival of Discover for desktop may represent a new hope.
Discover functions as a sort of Personalized Feed that adapts to each user, displaying content deemed relevant to the individual based on their interests, search history, location, and other variables.
This feature was launched in 2020 for mobile devices, becoming a relevant and coveted source of traffic for many websites, as it offers the possibility of showing yourself directly to your target audience.
Five years later, Google has decided to bring the power of Discover to its desktop version. Similar to the mobile version, this selection of content will appear on the main page of Google, below the search bar. This was shown by Nicola Agius, SEO and Discover Director at Reach PLC, through a post on LinkedIn.
This means that SEO professionals and website editors will need to work on their strategy to appear in Discover, thus reaching individuals interested in their content without them having to conduct a search, and bypassing the barrier that AI Overviews can sometimes pose.
