Google launches Gemini 3 Flash: faster, cheaper, and superior to GPT-5.2

The new model offers response times that are three times faster than Gemini 2.5 Pro and at a fraction of its cost.

Google has just expanded its family of AI models with Gemini 3 Flash, a version designed to be extremely fast and inexpensive while maintaining the intelligence level of the recently introduced models, Gemini 3 Pro and the Gemini 3 Deep Think mode.

The company describes it as “cutting-edge intelligence designed for speed,” and positions it as the default model in the Gemini app and in the AI mode of the search engine. This means that millions of users are already utilizing this version without having to change any configuration settings.

Until now, the mental framework was simple: if you desired speed and a good price, you would opt for a lightweight model; if you required complex reasoning, you would choose a “large” model such as Pro or Thinking. Gemini 3 Flash aims precisely to break that dichotomy: it preserves the Pro-level reasoning of Gemini 3, yet delivers response times three times faster than Gemini 2.5 Pro and at a fraction of its cost.

A model that “thinks” just enough… and costs less

The technical key to Gemini 3 Flash lies in how it manages its “thinking.” The model is capable of modulating how much work it processes according to the task: it can allocate more internal steps when the use case is complex, but also reduce its effort for simpler tasks, thereby controlling both costs and processing times.

This approach directly benefits users financially, since, on average, Flash utilizes 30% fewer tokens than Gemini 2.5 Pro for typical traffic while completing everyday tasks with high precision. This means that for the same task, it processes fewer “units of text,” making it more cost-effective for users, as their monthly credits last longer. The official pricing is $0.50 per million input tokens, and $3 per million output tokens (audio remains at $1 per million input tokens), which is significantly lower than the costs of the Pro models.

“With this launch, we are making the next-generation intelligence of Gemini 3 accessible to everyone in Google products,” the company explains.

Better than GPT-5.2 Extra High

In Google’s internal tests, Gemini 3 Flash delivers advanced results on academic reasoning and expert knowledge tasks, posting figures such as 90.4% on GPQA Diamond (PhD-level science questions) and strong results on Humanity’s Last Exam, which evaluates advanced reasoning without relying on external tools. In MMMU Pro, a benchmark blending mathematics, science, art, and engineering with images, the model achieves 81.2%, a performance comparable to that of Gemini 3 Pro.

Compared with external models, Gemini 3 Flash outperforms GPT-5.2 Extra High (OpenAI’s maximum reasoning profile) in several key benchmarks. For example, in SimpleQA Verified, which focuses on knowledge-based questions, Flash reaches 68.7% compared to GPT-5.2 Extra High’s 38%; in multimodal reasoning MMMU-Pro, 81.2% versus 79.5%; and in Video-MMMU, 86.9% compared to 85.9%.

Speed, cost, and the famous “Pareto frontier”

Google emphasizes that Gemini 3 Flash lies on the “Pareto frontier” between quality, cost, and speed: in other words, it is challenging to find a model that improves any one of these three variables without compromising another. Compared with Gemini 2.5 Pro, Flash is approximately three times faster and still delivers better overall performance, according to the independent comparison by Artificial Analysis referenced by the company.

In practice, this positions Gemini 3 Flash as the preferred model for any application requiring near real-time response: conversational interfaces, in-product assistants, interactive experiences, or content analysis while the user is actively working. The role of models such as Gemini 3 Pro becomes more specialized, reserved for scenarios where every incremental boost in performance justifies additional cost and longer wait times.

Designed for developers: agents, code, and video

On the developer side, Gemini 3 Flash has been engineered to create high-frequency iterative workflows—the kind that require an AI system to react multiple times per minute. In SWE-bench Verified, a benchmark that measures models’ abilities to function as coding agents in real software repositories, Flash achieves 78%, surpassing both the 2.5 series and Gemini 3 Pro itself.

Google presents it as a balance of three domains: agentic coding (a model that not only writes code, but also navigates projects, locates errors, and suggests patches), production-ready systems, and latency-sensitive interactive applications. Furthermore, its strong performance in tools and multimodal analysis makes it particularly well-suited for agents that combine text, images, and video, such as support bots that process screenshots or in-game assistants that understand on-screen activity.

Multimodal for the everyday user

In the Gemini app, Gemini 3 Flash becomes the default model, replacing the previous 2.5 Flash. This means that any user can take advantage of its multimodal capabilities for highly specific tasks: from asking it to analyze a short video and provide an actionable plan (for example, how to improve one’s golf swing) to transforming a spoken idea into a functional app prototype in a matter of minutes.

In the AI search mode, Flash inherits the reasoning of Gemini 3 Pro, but it is packaged in the search experience: it understands questions with multiple nuances, integrates real-time local information with links from across the web, and delivers organized responses so the user can move efficiently from research to action.

Availability and enterprise adoption

Gemini 3 Flash is now available in preview for developers via the Gemini API on Google AI Studio, Google Antigravity, Vertex AI, and Gemini Enterprise, as well as being integrated with tools such as Gemini CLI and Android Studio. On the product side, it is being deployed globally as the default model both in the Gemini app and in AI-based search mode.

In the enterprise context, Google showcases real-world applications: companies such as JetBrains, Bridgewater Associates, or Figma are already using Gemini 3 Flash to transform internal processes, leveraging its inference speed, efficiency, and reasoning that is comparable to much larger models.

For those integrating the model via API, the announced pricing ($0.50 per million input tokens and $3 per million output tokens) places it in a highly competitive range compared with other lightweight models in the market, including those from OpenAI.
