Throughout its 21-year history, Facebook has shaped the landscape of social networks as well as the online world in general. It has accomplished this thanks to its ability to develop effective solutions that foster user connectivity and increase business visibility, but also by recognizing when it is time to conclude certain cycles. A recent example of the latter is its decision to eliminate two of its Social Plugins: the “Like” button and the “Comments” button.
Facebook has explained that it will discontinue these two Social Plugins on February 10, 2026, and that the process will not generate any errors on websites where they are still integrated. The platform’s decision has been made with current developer needs in mind and after concluding that these functions are no longer relevant.
“This change reflects our commitment to maintaining a modern and efficient platform that meets the current needs of developers while also allowing us to invest in future innovations. The plugins that will be discontinued belong to an earlier era of web development, and their use has naturally declined as the digital landscape has evolved,” Facebook stated in an official release.
Social Plugins are code snippets that allow websites to integrate features connected to the Facebook experience. They were introduced with the aim of enabling users accessing a website to interact with its content in ways that would also be reflected in their Facebook activity, thereby increasing website visibility and driving traffic.
The “Like” button was launched as a Social Plugin in 2010, followed by the “Comments” button a year later. The former is embedded in a website as a function that allows users to “like” a webpage, article, and so forth, and have this content automatically shared to their Facebook news feed. Meanwhile, the “Comments” button plugin enables users to publicly comment on a website using their Facebook account, also offering the option to share that comment to their own profile.
Although these two Social Plugins are set to disappear soon, Facebook does still offer others that will, for now, remain active—such as the “Share” button, “Embedded Posts,” “Page Plugin,” and the “Embedded Video Player and Live Video.”
As explained by the social network, on February 10, the “Like” and “Comments” button plugins will be rendered as a 0x0 pixel. In other words, they will become a completely invisible element on websites where they are still installed.
Facebook assures that, “there will be no error messages or failures in functionality, and this should not in any way affect the operation or the core features of your website.”
Furthermore, if you wish to get ahead of this change and remove these two plugins immediately, all you need to do is delete the plugin’s code from your website.
