Zru incorporates network tokens into its payment system to enhance conversion in eCommerce

Network tokenization allows for charging even if the card has expired. Zru integrates it without technical changes for the merchant.

The Spanish payment orchestration platform Zru has announced the addition of a new feature to its system: network tokenization. This technology, driven by leading card brands like Visa and Mastercard, allows the real card number to be replaced by an identifier (token) that can continue to function even if the physical card changes (due to loss, renewal, or expiration). Thus, it is gaining prominence in the digital payments realm because of its ability to reduce fraud, improve approval rates for charges, and facilitate more stable transactions, especially in models such as eCommerce and online subscriptions, where continuity in collections is crucial.

What is a network token and why it improves the payment experience

Although the term token is already common in digital payments (as a way to securely store sensitive data), network tokens provide an additional layer of security and functionality. The key difference is that instead of being generated by the payment service provider (PSP, such as Stripe, Adyen, or RedSys), these tokens are issued directly by the card networks like Visa or Mastercard.

This means they are better integrated into the global financial system and offer clear operational advantages: each network token is linked exclusively to a merchant (avoiding unwanted cross-uses), but can be used with multiple payment processors simultaneously, which facilitates multichannel orchestration.

Moreover — and this is the most tangible — they are not affected by changes to the customer’s physical card. If it is lost, expires, or is replaced, the token remains valid. In practice, this means fewer interruptions in collections and less need to ask the customer to update their information.

Also, because it is a standard supported by the card networks themselves, its use helps reduce fraud and payment rejections. In some cases, it can even help improve the economic conditions associated with transactions, such as more competitive fees.

How Zru has implemented network tokenization

Zru has integrated this functionality into its platform with the goal of avoiding technical complexities for merchants. When a customer pays with a card, the system automatically requests the network token from the corresponding network. This token is securely stored and reused in future transactions, as long as the PSP allows it.

Thanks to its payment orchestration model, Zru allows the same credential (the token) to be used with different payment providers, which increases flexibility and resilience in collections. And the most interesting thing: the activation of this feature is done from the Zru control panel, within the connections area, without the need for new technical integrations if the merchant is already connected.

This approach allows companies to adopt advanced payment infrastructure, without having to undertake long developments or reconfigure their current systems.

Security, continuity, and better conversion

One of the most relevant benefits of network tokens is their impact on the continuity of collections. In a typical scenario — like a monthly subscription — if a card expires or is replaced, the charge may fail. This requires the customer to update their information, which often results in revenue losses and accidental cancellations.

With network tokenization, this risk disappears: the card network automatically updates the relationship between the token and the new card number (PAN), so the merchant can continue charging without interruptions and without user intervention.

At the same time, as this system does not transmit the real card number between systems, the exposure to fraud is significantly reduced, and the acceptance rate of payments increases. This is especially important in card-not-present contexts, such as eCommerce, where the cardholder is not physically present.

In summary: fewer steps for the customer, fewer errors, and a smoother payment experience, which translates into more conversion and higher revenue retention.

A technical evolution with direct business impact

With this integration, Zru reinforces its role as a payment platform adaptable to complex scenarios, yet without transferring that complexity to merchants. Network tokenization is not just a technological improvement: it is a tool to ensure more secure, continuous, and efficient payments, essential elements to compete in a digital environment where reliability in collection is increasingly strategic.
