YouTube has released its own list of New Year’s resolutions, a comprehensive declaration of intent aimed at guiding the video content industry into a new era. The letter, signed by Neal Mohan, CEO of YouTube, highlights as main priorities for 2026 the reinvention of entertainment, placing content creators at the center and providing them with new monetization opportunities, strengthening safety for children and teens, and fostering creativity by leveraging artificial intelligence in its service.

A new approach to entertainment: creators as stars

YouTube has diligently worked to become a platform that connects audiences with culturally and socially relevant moments. This ranges from executing immersive experiences during major music album launches, to covering high-profile events such as the Super Bowl or the Oscars red carpet.

This evolution has resulted in major YouTubers also developing top-tier productions, acquiring huge spaces in Hollywood and other locations to spearhead new formats and achieve flawless production quality. This new reality completely transforms the original concept of UGC (User-Generated Content).

While technology opens up new creative possibilities, it is YouTube creators and artists who are leading the way in reinventing entertainment,” explains Mohan. “When creators have full control over the production and distribution of their own content, the only limit is their imagination.”

Greater variety of formats, greater variety of possibilities

Long-form videos, Shorts, music videos, podcasts, live streams, and more. YouTube offers its users a wide array of formats that can be accessed on various devices (mobile phones, tablets, televisions, etc.), adapting to their needs.

To further enhance its offerings, the platform has announced new formats to be released in 2026. For instance, it will update Shorts (which already averages 200 billion daily views) to support image-based publications.

YouTube is also investing in enhancements for its music ecosystem, developing new ways for users to discover fresh artists, access the stories that shape songs, and make it easier to explore and enjoy the latest releases.

YouTube TV

With a mission to simplify the at-home television experience, YouTube TV will introduce features designed to provide greater control to the user. Among the major upgrades is the launch of a fully customizable multi-view and the addition of more than ten specialized plans on YouTube TV, covering sports, entertainment, and news.

Through these changes, the platform seeks to establish itself as the preferred destination for viewers, prioritizing versatility and customization through formats tailored to the evolving demands of the audiovisual market.

Enhanced parental controls

YouTube has pledged to strengthen its commitment to digital safety by launching new tools designed to help parents supervise the activity of children and teens.

According to Kantar data from 2025, 93% of American viewers between 18 and 27 years old state that YouTube helps them learn new skills. Separately, a 2025 Oxford Economics survey revealed that 79% of American educators who use YouTube agree that it assists students in their learning. These figures demonstrate that the platform has become a powerful educational resource.

In light of this reality, the company seeks to balance open exploration with adult supervision. To that end, in 2026 parents will find it easier to set up new child accounts and quickly switch between profiles. This will ensure that each member of a family can access and enjoy the appropriate viewing experience.

Another upcoming update will allow parents to control how much time their children spend watching Shorts, with the ability to instantly reset the timer.

New monetization opportunities for YouTubers

In the past four years, YouTube has paid more than 100 billion dollars to YouTubers, artists, and media companies. Additionally, in 2024, its ecosystem contributed 55 billion dollars to the United States GDP and generated more than 490,000 full-time jobs.

The platform asserts that in 2026, it intends to continue supporting local economies and its creators. To do this, YouTube will introduce new monetization avenues ranging from product sales and brand partnerships to fan-driven funding options (such as gems and gifts).

Regarding brand partnerships, the social network already assists influencer marketing agencies in connecting with brands to contract and carry out successful campaigns through its Creator Collaboration Center. To further accelerate these collaborations, new tools will be implemented to, for example, add a link to a brand’s website in Shorts or replace a brand advertisement within a video once the partnership is finalized, transforming older catalogs into sources of recurring revenue.

YouTube will also continue to leverage its shopping platform through YouTube Shopping, which already features over 500,000 creators. Furthermore, 2026 may be the year when this feature becomes available in Spain, although the social network has not yet provided information about this in its announcement.

Ensuring AI serves the community

To promote and safeguard creativity, YouTube will concentrate its efforts on four critical areas.

AI Creation Tools

Artificial intelligence has established itself as a creative engine, with more than one million channels using these capabilities daily as of December. YouTube will soon expand its toolset, allowing for personalized content generation in Shorts, game production with prompts, and music experimentation. These innovations are intended to reinforce AI as a means of expression that enhances human talent, rather than replacing it.

Transparency and protection in AI usage

With the rise of deepfakes, YouTube is tightening its safeguards by mandating the explicit labeling of realistic synthetic content. The platform will remove any AI-generated material that violates its Community Guidelines, relying on the Content ID system to permit creators to manage the usage of their own image. Moreover, YouTube advocates for legal frameworks such as the U.S. law against fake content, prioritizing creative integrity and transparency to help viewers discern what is real from what is artificial.

Managing AI slop

The proliferation of low-value automated content, known as “AI slop”, has led YouTube to strengthen its control mechanisms. While the platform maintains its commitment to freedom of expression, it is updating its recommendation and monetization systems to curb the spread of this material.

These actions, similar to those used against spam or clickbait, are designed to preserve the quality of the ecosystem without stifling emerging trends. The objective is to ensure that artificial intelligence does not undermine the user experience, maintaining a high standard that protects both the audience and the sustainability of the advertising model.

Enhancing the user experience

YouTube is transforming its engagement with content via AI-driven tools that facilitate learning and accessibility. In December, more than 20 million users accessed the “Ask” tool to learn more about the content they were viewing, making inquiries such as, “What ingredients do I need to make this recipe?”

In addition, the platform has confirmed that, in December, on average, over 6 million people spent at least 10 minutes per day watching content with automatic dubbing. These innovations are aimed at strengthening the bond between creators and audiences, ensuring universal understanding and a far more immersive experience.

A look toward the future

Finally, Mohan concludes his letter of intentions for 2026 by expressing his confidence in the ability of YouTubers to connect with the public and to create remarkable projects. “I am frequently asked who will be the most important YouTube creator five or ten years from now. My answer is always the same: someone you have never heard of who is starting their channel today. And that is what motivates me to keep building the stage for this generation and those yet to come.”
