YouTube doesn’t want to budge an inch of ground in the battle for user attention.
And with this new feature, it only serves to prove it.
The primary objective of this feature is to prevent “sensationalist thumbnails”, to which we have become so accustomed on YouTube, from leading users to watch videos expecting one thing, only to find the reality is entirely different. At present, this feature is available on the YouTube mobile application for Android for a small percentage of users.
By facilitating the discovery of long-form videos through “Short”-style previews, YouTube aims to ensure users never feel the need to exit the application in search of information or entertainment elsewhere. For marketing professionals, the lesson is clear: content must now be more modular and visually compelling than ever, as a user’s first interaction with our brand may be through an automated preview.
