Internet is not losing its popularity and usefulness, quite the opposite. Every day that passes is one more in which people from all over the world find something new to do on the web, whether it be for educational, work or entertainment purposes.
This year, We Are Social has once again published its Digital 2023 report in collaboration with Meltwater, and this time it has shown that in the last year there have been digital behaviors with some of the most noticeable changes compared to previous years. Now, let’s take a closer look at which types of websites were most visited, the most visited web pages and the role of social media in the online world.
Types of most visited websites in the world
According to data from the Digital 2023 report, during 2022, 94.8% of Internet users worldwide connected to chat and instant messaging platforms (vs. 95.6% in 2021), while 94.6% were on social networks (vs. 95.2% in 2021), 81.1% visited web search engines or private portals (vs. 83.6% in 2021), 76% were on shopping-related sites (vs. 58 .1% in 2021) and 55% (vs. 56.9% in 2021) entered map and location services.
Google maintains its leadership among the most visited websites in the world.
According to this year’s report, based on Similarweb data collected between December 2021 and November 2022, Google remains the most visited website on the planet as of January 2023.
The top 10 most popular internet pages are:
- Google.com
- YouTube.com
- Facebook.com
- Twitter.com
- Instagram.com
- Baidu.com
- Aliexpress.com
- Wikipedia.org
- Yahoo.com
- XVideos.com
When comparing the top with that of 2022, it can be seen that almost nothing has changed, in fact, the Top 5 has been maintained with the positions of Google, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The only entry into the top 10 is Aliexpress, which ranked number 7.
In 2021, Yandex, the Russian Google, had entered the top 10, occupying the ninth place, but this year it did not occupy any position among the 20 most visited sites, something that is probably due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. It can also be seen that the porn content pages remained within the top 20: Xvideos was ranked 10th and Pornhub ranked 12th.
Aliexpress enters the top 10 of the most visited websites in the world
The e-commerce of the Alibaba Group takes a spectacular leap in the ranking and is now in the seventh position of the websites with the most traffic in the world, although it is still very far from the undisputed leader, Google.com. Aliexpress is the first eCommerce in the table, with nearly twice as many visits as Amazon.
Social networks lead the top of the most visited websites in the world.
The report shows that the average time internet users spent browsing on Google was 11 minutes and 09 seconds – 21 seconds less than in 2021 – with a total of 87.1 billion visits. Meanwhile, YouTube managed to capture the attention of its users for an average of 21 minutes and 32 seconds, about 10 seconds less than the previous year.
In the case of Facebook, which recorded 19.4 billion visits, the average stay on the site was 9 minutes and 58 seconds (decreasing for the second consecutive year).
Twitter, which has been in the spotlight in recent months, remained in fourth place on the top and recorded an average of 10 minutes and 45 seconds of user stay (only one second more than in 2021), as well as registering at least 6.91 billion total visits. Meanwhile, Instagram recorded an average of 7 minutes and 46 seconds of visit time (5 seconds more than in 2021).
