After Will Cathcart, Director of WhatsApp, stated in 2022 that a native app for iPad “would be great“… that promise has finally been fulfilled.

This is the WhatsApp App for iPad

In truth, the launch did not come with major announcements or press releases, but rather with a simple post on X, responding to a request made by one of the platform’s users.

We had to wait several years, and it is surprising that, being one of the most widely used messaging apps in the world, it still did not have its own application for these devices.

This is something that its eternal competitor, Telegram, took advantage of, posting a rather ironic response to that post.

Until now, WhatsApp could only be used on Apple tablets through the use of WhatsApp Web.

As explained on the WhatsApp blog, users will be able to enjoy their favorite features through an interface adapted to enhance communication and productivity, especially in multitasking contexts.

Integration with iPadOS Multitasking Features

One of the main advantages of this app is its integration with iPadOS multitasking functions such as Stage Manager, Split View, and Slide Over. These features allow users to use WhatsApp at the same time as other applications. In this way, it is possible to send messages while browsing the internet or research group travel options during a voice or video call.

The app is also compatible with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil, which expands its potential for professional and creative use.

Additionally, WhatsApp allows users to make group video calls with up to 32 participants, share their screen in real time, and switch between the front and rear cameras without interruptions. This set of tools makes the application a useful ally both for business meetings and for coordinating plans with friends or family.

Multi-device technology and enhanced privacy

The iPad version is based on WhatsApp’s multi-device technology, which ensures synchronization of conversations between different devices such as iPhone, Mac, and iPad without the need for the phone to be connected. This system allows messages, calls, and multimedia files to be protected through end-to-end encryption, a key feature for maintaining privacy regardless of the device used.

The application also includes additional security features, such as the ability to restrict chats. This is especially useful when the iPad is a shared device, as it helps to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive conversations.

It looks like after launching and integrating Meta AI across the Meta ecosystem, they are getting their act together.

Now all that remains is for Meta to release an iPad app for Instagram—something its CEO, Adam Mosseri, also said “would be great” to have. However, it has not happened yet, as it is not among the company’s current priorities for the social network.

Well, I see a pattern here…don’t you?
