Instagram has introduced Edits, a new free video editing app created to rival the popular ByteDance tool, CapCut. This launch comes at the same time as the recent ban on TikTok and CapCut apps in the United States. Although these apps became operational again after being banned for almost a day, neither is currently available for download on the iOS and Android app stores in the U.S.
“Edits is more than just a video editing app; it’s a comprehensive suite of creative tools,” said Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, in a brief video posted on Threads and Instagram, sharing the news:

“We’ll be collaborating with a select group of video creators to gather their insights and enhance the experience. More updates will follow soon,” stated Mosseri.
Edits is a free mobile app, and its unclear whether a paid version will be available. It offers a wide array of creative video editing tools. Key features include:
The app is built to be user-friendly and accessible. Users can start a project by importing existing clips or recording directly within the app. Once in the app, a range of editing features like trimming, color adjustments, filters, and special effects can be applied.
Additionally, Edits includes an inspiration tab for creators to explore trends and gather ideas for their projects, featuring:
Edits will be available for download on the App Store beginning March 13, 2025. iOS users can pre-order to receive a notification when the app goes live. Initially launching for iOS, an Android version is anticipated soon after.
Both Edits and CapCut provide advanced mobile video editing tools, such as special effects, transitions, and audio enhancement. However, there are distinct differences:
