From the very beginning of the history of social networks, there have been users and brands that have managed to stand out amid the competition and secure a place in the hearts (as well as in the browsers and apps) of users worldwide. The most-followed influencers on social networks are capable of making content go viral, maximizing its reach, setting trends, and gaining, at each step, a greater level of media influence that enables them to easily promote any kind of content.
Although, as you will see, in many cases, they are so immensely wealthy that they do not even need to do so.
Currently, there are millions of profiles and users filling social networks, but only a select few manage to amass legions of followers and build a strong community that elevates them to the pinnacle of social platforms.
And interestingly, those at the top are two gods of Olympus. The Olympus of soccer, to be more precise:
As you can see in the table below, compiled by analyzing the 25 most-followed accounts on each social network at the beginning of January 2026, Cristiano Ronaldo clearly leads the ranking, far surpassing his archrival on the field, Leo Messi. Both have their largest base of followers on Instagram, although they also attract significant audiences on networks such as Facebook or Twitter. Coming up behind them are YouTube mega creator Mr. Beast and celebrities from the worlds of film and music such as Selena Gomez and Dwayne Johnson.
Just outside this top 10, which concludes with the singer and actress Ariana Grande, there are other influencers and celebrities, including Taylor Swift, cricket player Virat Kohli, the Indian YouTube channel T-Series, Beyoncé, and Khloé Kardashian, all of whom exceed 300 million followers.
I am afraid there is no Spanish influencer in the leading positions. To find an account of Spanish origin among the world’s most-followed, one must go down to the 20th position, where Real Madrid appears, with a total of 250 million followers.
As mentioned, of all these social networks, it is on Instagram where various influencers achieve the majority of their followers. The table, once again, is led by Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi, followed by Selena Gomez. To provide context regarding the influence of these soccer players on the social network, let us recall that between the two of them, they account for seven of the ten most-liked Instagram posts in history.
On YouTube, the landscape shifts, and the leading positions are held by four gigantic powerhouses in social audiovisual production. Of course, the top position belongs to MrBeast who, despite controversies, firmly leads the ranking.
The second place goes to T-Series, a major music and film production company from India, known on YouTube for being a massive channel that publishes primarily Bollywood music videos and movie trailers, and which became a global phenomenon as the first to surpass both 100 and 200 million subscribers. Meanwhile, Cocomelon occupies third place as a successful children’s YouTube and streaming franchise, known for its 3D animated music videos featuring the character JJ, his family, and friends. Unfortunately, none of the main Spanish YouTubers appear in this ranking.
Who said that Facebook was dead? At least, this is not the case for Cristiano Ronaldo, who also leads this network with 171 million followers, well above the other celebrity-related account, that of Shakira. In between are corporate or institutional accounts, such as Facebook itself, Samsung, or Real Madrid.
As you may know, we have an article dedicated specifically to the most-followed TikTokers worldwide which has long been led by comedian Khaby Lame, ahead of Charli D’Amelio and Mr Beast. As you will notice, among them there are no leading Spanish TikTokers, although Mexican influencer Kimberly Loaiza does appear.
Elon Musk has the most-followed account on X/Twitter worldwide. Quite unexpected, is it not? Apart from this, ahem, coincidence, the top accounts on Twitter are very different from those on other social networks, with the presence of more institutional profiles, such as Barack Obama, Donald Trump, or the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. Unsurprisingly, the first non-politician-non-Musk on the list is Cristiano Ronaldo.
