Staying true to its philosophy of “empowering discovery,” TikTok has confirmed that UK users aged 18 and over will gradually begin seeing the option to subscribe to a paid plan. For £3.99 per month, the British community will be able to enjoy endless scrolling without ad interruptions.

However, for those who prefer to stick with the free model, the platform says there will be no major changes. The core experience (the “For You” algorithm, access to creators, and editing tools) will remain exactly the same.

Kris Boger, TikTok’s Managing Director in the UK, was clear in the statement: “Choice for our community and growth for British businesses go hand in hand.” The social network of the moment does not want to neglect the SMEs that have found in TikTok an unprecedented sales engine.

Keeping the free version with personalized ads is vital for brands such as Ridiculously Rich or Wonderskin, which rely on the platform’s precise targeting to turn views into real revenue and, in turn, contribute to the country’s GDP.

How to subscribe to TikTok’s ad-free plan

You only need to go to the settings section of your TikTok account. Once there, click on the content preferences option and choose “TikTok Ad-Free”. This way, you will not see ads on the platform and your data will not be used for advertising purposes. You can change your mind at any time.

Who can subscribe to TikTok’s ad-free plan and how much it costs

For now, the rollout is gradual for users in the UK who are 18 or older.

What happens if you do not subscribe to TikTok’s ad-free plan

Nothing. You will still be able to keep scrolling as usual. TikTok has guaranteed that access to features, creators, and content will be the same for both subscribers and users of the free version.

How this will affect businesses

The platform will maintain the personalized ads model for free users, allowing SMEs to continue reaching their target audiences.

Will TikTok’s ad-free plan come to other countries?

Although the official statement focuses on the British market, these kinds of tests are usually the prelude to a global rollout. Let us remember that just before launching TikTok Shop in Europe, it was launched in the UK to see how it would perform. And it worked. Then it arrived in France, Italy, and Germany; and later, in Spain.

In addition, other social networks such as Meta have already implemented subscription models in Europe to comply with data regulations, so it is highly likely that we will see this new TikTok model land in the Spanish market sooner rather than later. Although it may still need to pass through other countries first.
