Sears Mexico is a chain of department stores in Mexico that operated under the license of Sears Holdings Corporation, a US-based company. It is currently known simply as Sears and is considered a 100% Mexican company where products such as clothing, footwear, appliances, furniture, home goods, and electronics can be found.

History of Sears Mexico

The history of this company begins in 1886 when a 22-year-old young man named Richard Sears worked as an employee at the North Redwood train station in Minnesota. One day, he received a shipment of watches intended for a local jeweler, but the jeweler refused to accept them. Instead of returning the watches, Sears decided to buy them and sell them, thus making a small profit. This success encouraged him to quit his job and start a mail-order watch sales business.

After that, he moved away to bigger city, Chicago, where he met Alva C. Roebuck, with whom he partnered to create Sears Roebuck. However, in 1899, Roebuck had to retire due to health issues. That same year, Sears partnered with an entrepreneur and clothing manufacturer named Julius Rosenwald.

That’s how the Sears catalog began to diversify, allowing customers to purchase almost any type of product through this system instead of just watches.

In 1908, Sears decided to retire and sold his stake to Rosenwald, who assumed the presidency.

From Chicago to Mexico

As mentioned earlier, Sears began with mail-order sales but opened its first retail store in Chicago and has since continued its growth.

By the 1940s, it became an international company, starting operations in Mexico, Canada, and Puerto Rico. The first store in Mexico City was inaugurated on February 27, 1947, on Insurgentes Avenue, captivating customers with its motto: “Complete satisfaction or take your money back.”

On April 28, 1997, CARSO Group, one of the largest, diversified and most important conglomerates of Latin America, acquired 85% of the shares in Mexico. Currently, Sears is a 100% Mexican company with more than 80 stores throughout the country.

Since then, it has become an online platform where customers can explore and purchase products, as well as access information about promotions, services, and other company-related features. Sales of Sears Mexico

They offer a wide range of products where you can find clothing, appliances, electronics, home decor, tools, hardware, lawn and garden goods, and even automotive products such as batteries or car accessories. Sears’ fashion section is one of the main online clothing stores in Mexico.

During the year 2020, Sears Mexico was affected by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, leading to the temporary closure of all its stores to the public from March 31 to June 15 of that year. These closures were a precautionary measure to safeguard the health and safety of customers and employees due to the health emergency.

These temporary closures and limited operation had a negative impact on several product categories. Specifically, areas such as perfumes, cosmetics, men’s and women’s fashion, furniture, appliances, and others, experienced significant effects in terms of sales and performance.

Sears Mexico reported sales of 17,717 million pesos (737.000 million euros) in 2020. These sales represented 44% of total sales and 73% of Grupo Sanborns‘ consolidated EBITDA, their parent company and one of the subsidiary companies from Carso Group.

As of December 31, 2020, Sears had 96 department stores, 1 perfumery boutique in Mexico, and one store in El Salvador, with a total sales area of 864,000 square meters.

Nowadays, Sears seeks to strengthen its position by maintaining consumer loyalty, adapting to their preferences and needs, promoting eCommerce, and increasing the number of items offered on the website.
