Rafa Nadal has announced his retirement after a remarkable 22-year career, during which he won 92 titles. Alongside his victories on the field, he has also built a successful advertising career, becoming the face of numerous campaigns for a wide range of brands. These brands have sought to align themselves with the values Nadal embodies—such as hard work, perseverance, and commitment.

As a tribute to him, we will take a look back at some of his standout moments in advertising with the brands that have accompanied him along the way. 😉

Kia

Kia is likely the brand most closely associated with Rafa Nadal. The tennis star from Manacor has been collaborating with Kia since 2004. One hallmark of Nadal’s relationships with his sponsors is their longevity. At that time, Kia selected Nadal, then a young tennis prospect, as the global ambassador for the brand.

The association between Nadal and the Korean brand is so strong that in one of their most recent campaigns in 2023, Kia opted for outdoor advertising relying solely on the image of Nadal. Instead of using their logo or traditional slogans, Kia displayed a massive billboard featuring Nadal’s image and a single phrase: “Think of a car brand.” This approach highlighted the strength of the connection between Nadal and the brand, so well-known that they didn’t need to mention it directly to be recognized.

In addition to his presence in advertising campaigns, Kia has supported Nadal in various initiatives, both sporting and social. For instance, Kia has sponsored the Rafa Nadal Academy, further cementing their support not only for Nadal’s athletic career but also for his more personal projects.

Nike

The relationship between Rafa Nadal and Nike has been one of the most iconic in the world of sports. Since signing their agreement early in his professional career, Nike has been Nadal’s supplier of sports apparel and footwear, accompanying him through his most memorable moments on the court. This partnership has helped solidify Nadal’s image as an athlete who embodies values like hard work, resilience, and passion—qualities that Nike also promotes.

One of Nike’s most memorable campaigns featuring Nadal was the “Find Your Fast” campaign in 2016, where he shared the spotlight with other legendary athletes like Serena Williams, Kobe Bryant, and Wayne Rooney. The campaign aimed to promote the Nike Air Zoom Elite 8 shoes, emphasizing speed and performance in sports—attributes closely aligned with Nadal’s aggressive and dynamic playing style.

Nike has also customized various editions of apparel and footwear exclusively for Rafa Nadal, such as the famous sleeveless shirts he wore early in his career or the limited-edition shoes designed to meet the demands of professional tennis. These collaborations have reinforced Nadal’s image as one of the brand’s most prominent global ambassadors.

Such is the strength of their relationship that in 2019, Nike released an emotional video reflecting on Nadal’s journey since he was just 16 years old, celebrating his evolution and success throughout his career.

Movistar

This association reflects the shared values of effort, resilience, and teamwork. Nadal has been one of the company’s most prominent ambassadors, participating in several advertising campaigns and collaborating on long-term projects.

One of the most notable campaigns was “La llamada” (The call) in 2021, launched during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this campaign, Movistar paid tribute to Spanish athletes, highlighting their ability to inspire the public during challenging times. Nadal, along with other figures like Carolina Marín and Alejandro Valverde, starred in the ad, which emphasized the importance of sports in maintaining hope and unity.

Beyond advertising, Nadal’s relationship with Movistar extends to meaningful partnerships. The company has supported the Rafa Nadal Academy, an educational and sports project founded by Nadal in his hometown of Manacor. Movistar has collaborated with the academy not only as a sponsor but also by providing advanced connectivity and communication technology to facilitate the learning and training of young tennis talents.

The most recent campaign between the two, “Movimiento azul,” (Blue Movement) was launched just a month ago.

Santander

The relationship between Rafa Nadal and Banco Santander has been central to the bank’s marketing campaigns, particularly in areas related to financial education and cybersecurity. Nadal has served as a brand ambassador for several years, playing a key role in campaigns designed to connect with the public from an educational and trustworthy perspective.

One of the standout campaigns was the 2022 cybersecurity campaign, where Nadal offered practical tips on avoiding phishing and protecting personal information online. Under the slogan A Day Online with Rafa Nadal, the campaign was created to help users improve their digital practices and raise awareness of the risks associated with the internet.

In addition to digital security, Banco Santander has used Nadal’s image to emphasize values like perseverance and effort, which are closely aligned with the bank’s philosophy. This is reflected in other initiatives where Nadal has served as a spokesperson, delivering messages of personal and professional growth. His involvement in these campaigns has reinforced themes of overcoming challenges, both in the world of sports and in the financial sector.

Iberia

One of the most iconic collaborations between Nadal and Iberia was the Christmas campaign “Let’s take off to 2022 together” launched in December 2021. In this campaign, Iberia brought together Nadal and another Spanish sports icon, Pau Gasol, to deliver a message of optimism following the difficult years of the pandemic. The ad highlighted the importance of personal reunions and the collective desire to return to normalcy.

The spot focused on the emotion of reconnecting, a theme that resonated deeply during the pandemic when many trips and family gatherings were restricted. The filming was particularly emotional, as Nadal and Gasol had not seen each other in person for more than two years, which added authenticity to the campaign and amplified its message of hope and reunion.
