There are occasions when an entrepreneur manages to generate a great deal of buzz around their product, but after a few days or weeks of fame, it quickly fades and amounts to nothing. This has not been the case for Peter Steinberger, the mind behind the phenomenon OpenClaw, who has just announced that he has joined the OpenAI team.
OpenClaw (also known as Clawdbot or Moltbot) is a free, open source AI agent that is installed on your computer and can autonomously interact with your operating system, files, and applications. These characteristics propelled it to viral status and placed Steinberger at the center of the AI landscape.
“A myriad of possibilities suddenly opened up for me, with countless people trying to push me in various directions, offering advice, asking how they could invest or what I planned to do next. To say it was overwhelming would be an understatement,” explained the Austrian developer on his blog.
Ultimately, it was Sam Altman’s company that managed to captivate the interest of OpenClaw’s creator. “I felt that OpenAI was the best place to keep advancing my vision and expanding its impact. The more I spoke with people there, the clearer it became that we both shared the same outlook.”
Steinberger has stated that his next mission is to create an AI agent that ‘even my mother can use’. According to his remarks, achieving this goal will require greater focus and careful consideration regarding security, as well as enhanced access to updated models and research. By joining forces with OpenAI, he anticipates these requirements will be addressed.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has enthusiastically shared the news on Twitter: “Peter Steinberger is joining OpenAI to advance the next generation of personal agents. He is a genius with incredible ideas about the future of intelligent agents that interact with each other to accomplish very useful things for people. We hope that this quickly becomes a central element of our product offering.
OpenClaw will remain an open source project that OpenAI will continue to support. The future will be extremely multi-agent, and for us, it is important to support open source as part of that vision.”
Currently, OpenAI is in negotiations for a new funding round of approximately $100 billion, which would raise its valuation to between $750 billion and $830 billion. However, certain concerns had recently arisen among investors regarding the company’s ability to fulfill its commitments for investments in new AI infrastructure, as well as questions about the long-term sustainability of its business model.
The strategic recruitment of Steinberger may help steady the waters by reinforcing OpenAI’s commitment to the development of AI agents and by adding an emerging competitor to their team. Additionally, this move comes just days after Anthropic, another major player in the AI sector, secured a $30 billion funding round, raising its valuation to $380 billion.
And, speaking of Anthropic, while it is not known which other technology firms may have attempted to recruit Steinberger, it is rather ironic that the developer ultimately chose to join its rival. Why do I say this? Because the name “Clawdbot” (the original name of OpenClaw) was a tribute to Claude, Anthropic’s AI. This gesture was not well received, as the AI company threatened legal action against Steinberger if he did not change the name of his agent.
As he has stated, Steinberger’s focus has shifted: “Yes, I can easily see how OpenClaw could become a great company. And no, I am not excited by that. I am a builder at heart. I have already gone through the entire process of creating a company, dedicated 13 years of my life to it, and learned a great deal. What I want is to change the world, not to build a large corporation, and collaborating with OpenAI is the fastest way to make it available to everyone.”
However, this does not mean that OpenClaw is going to disappear—far from it. OpenClaw will become a foundation that will be backed by OpenAI. Additionally, Steinberger’s company will maintain its open source model, an essential requirement for its creator, as well as its independence.
“The community surrounding OpenClaw is something magical, and OpenAI has made a strong commitment to enable me to dedicate my time to the project and is already sponsoring it. To structure it properly, I am working on establishing it as a foundation. It will continue to be a space for thinkers, hackers, and individuals seeking a way to control their data, with the aim of supporting even more models and companies.”
