OpenAI has announced the integration of Codex into the ChatGPT mobile app, for both iOS and Android, across all plans, although it can only connect to MacOS systems. In this way, Sam Altman’s company is aiming to ensure that “you can stay on top of things from anywhere while Codex does the work on your laptops, development environments, or remote environments.”
This move comes exactly one year after Codex’s official launch, and since then it has become one of OpenAI’s most ambitious bets to lead the large-scale AI race. In fact, this tool’s popularity among the most intensive users in the AI ecosystem has been striking since its debut, and today more than 4 million people around the world use it every week.
“A quick review can keep a work thread moving, avoid unnecessary rework, or help Codex move forward with the right context. Now you can do that from your phone,” the company explains in its announcement, reflecting the reality of many of its users, who have started relying on Codex for multiple critical tasks. “For work to keep moving, you need to be able to easily answer a question, review Codex’s findings, change direction, approve next steps, or add a new idea,” it adds.

In fact, OpenAI reinforces this idea of being able to maintain continuity in work already in progress as the main value of Codex’s integration into its app. In this way, users will be able to remotely connect to any of your machines where Codex is running (a laptop, for example): the app will display its status and make it possible to “work seamlessly across active threads, approvals, add-ons, and project context.”
As for security, OpenAI explains that files, credentials, permissions, and local configuration will remain on the machine where Codex is running, using a secure relay layer that keeps trusted machines accessible from different devices without exposing them directly to the internet.
In any case, OpenAI is not the first to offer something like this in a tool of this kind. For several months now, one of its biggest rivals, Claude Code, has offered a remote control feature similar to Codex’s, although in this case it requires your laptop to be turned on in order to execute changes. The main difference is that Claude prioritizes extreme privacy, processing everything on your actual hardware so that sensitive data never leaves your environment, while OpenAI is betting on a hybrid infrastructure that guarantees work continuity even if you lose physical access to your main computer.
