OpenAI has closed the largest funding round in history, although this is no longer breaking news. In fact, if my calculations are correct, this is the third time the company has managed to break startup industry records with colossal funding rounds that are counted in billions of dollars. In this instance, it is 122 billion dollars, consolidating its position as the second most valuable startup in the world, all thanks to the support of regular investors such as Softbank, Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia.
However, as previously mentioned, this is not the reason that brings us here today.
In the announcement regarding the closure of this mega-round, the company led by Sam Altman has taken the opportunity to proclaim its achievements and highlight its impressive figures, some of which were previously unknown. Additionally, it has explained what it is currently working on.
The super application from OpenAI is approaching
“We are creating a unified AI super application. As models become increasingly capable, the limiting factor is shifting from intelligence to usability. Users do not want disconnected tools. They want a single system that can understand intent, take action, and operate across diverse applications, data, and workflows. Our super application will integrate ChatGPT, Codex, browsing, and our agent capabilities into an agent-centric experience.”
In this way, OpenAI is presenting its next steps in the field of AI, seeking to simplify its ever-expanding portfolio of products. This move is partly a commercial strategy, but it is also positioned as an internal operational efficiency initiative: “a single product platform enables us to improve more quickly, conduct more consistent launches, and capture greater value generated by agent-based workflows.”
We are still in the early stages following the announcement, and it is difficult to predict what consequences this move will have for OpenAI. However, it fits with the restructuring the company has been undergoing since activating the ‘code red’ in December. At that time, Altman explained that it was ‘a critical moment for ChatGPT’, in a context where the company’s competitors, such as Anthropic and Google, were clearly surpassing GPT-5 in key industry tests like the LLM Arena, threatening OpenAI’s initial leadership in generative artificial intelligence. The idea was to reallocate resources and focus on once again building the best possible AI product. Some steps have already been taken in this direction, including the abandonment of the unsuccessful Sora video app.
The company now aims for a single, tightly integrated system: “an infrastructure that enables intelligence, intelligence that drives agents, and products that make those agents useful on a global scale.”
Nonetheless, as mentioned, OpenAI’s announcement includes many other noteworthy data points that merit review.
It states that currently, the company already generates 2 billion dollars in monthly revenue, a significant increase compared to just a year ago and a source of special pride for Sam Altman:
“OpenAI was the fastest technology platform to reach 10 million users, the fastest to reach 100 million, and soon will be the fastest to reach a billion weekly active users. One year after the launch of ChatGPT, we reached a billion dollars in revenue. By the end of 2024, we were generating a billion dollars per quarter. Currently, we generate two billion dollars in monthly revenue. By now, our revenue growth is four times faster than that of companies that defined the Internet and mobile technology eras, including Alphabet and Meta.”
Furthermore, the announcement highlights OpenAI’s penetration in the current global market, confirming that it now has over 900 million weekly active users and more than 50 million subscribers. These are some of its other remarkable figures:
Of course, amidst these figures, the enterprise sector occupies a significant role. Currently, revenue from OpenAI’s B2B clients already accounts for more than 40% of the company’s total and is expected to reach 50% “by the end of 2026”. In this regard, it is noteworthy that Codex already has more than 2 million weekly users (an increase of fivefold over the last three months), with usage growing by more than 70% month over month.
It is evident that the capital injection just secured through this latest funding round will allow OpenAI to advance its new strategy. However, with Google increasingly well-established in the AI landscape and other giants progressing in the multi-layer integration of artificial intelligence solutions, will OpenAI have enough space to grow sufficiently to offset its costs?
