What does Meta’s new AI agent have to do with the British rock band Muse? The answer is that they now share the same name and, according to the laws of social media, the Internet is not big enough for both of them.
Muse, Meta’s new AI, has taken over the @muse Instagram handle, which until now belonged to the British band. In this case, being the last to arrive did not work against it, because it belongs to the house, and the house always wins. For its part, the band has changed its username to @museband.
So far, neither Meta nor Muse (the band) has issued a statement regarding this social media handle swap, so users have been left to speculate. On one side, some believe Meta forced the change by using its power as Instagram’s owner to make the rock band give up its username. Like this Reddit user, whose post has sparked a wave of negative reactions toward Meta, Zuckerberg, and its new AI.
However, the name change has also happened on Twitter (X, if you prefer to call it that), where the band Muse is now @museband and the AI agent is simply @muse.
This handoff has also left behind an amusing anecdote. On August 8, Jason Toff, Senior Director of Product at Meta, made a small slip-up when he mentioned @museband in a post about the new AI agent. “I have been using @museband over the past few months and I can honestly say it is the best AI agent I have tried.” The post was later corrected.

On the other side of the debate are those who believe Meta reached an agreement with the rock band to take over its username. In this user’s case, they do not just believe it, they criticize it harshly.

The only thing we can really say for certain from all this is that Meta is betting heavily on its new product and wants to build a strong identity around it. It would not have been surprising for the company to simply go with the handle @museAI, but a giant like Meta is not used to settling for the second choice.
