The demand for fast access to information has made search engines and web browsers vital tools for navigating and discovering content on the expansive internet. These tools enable users to access a diverse array of resources, ranging from informational web pages to specialized services.
While there are many options available, a few undisputed leaders dominate the global market. Here are the most popular web search engines:
According to the website Statcounter, rankings of the most used search engines globally are regularly released. Let’s examine which search engines are prominent and how they fare (data from October 2024):
When searching for information online, Google is the go-to search engine for most people. Unsurprisingly, it holds the largest market share (significantly ahead of others), though it has seen a slight decline from 91.54% in November 2023 to 89.33% currently.
Besides being a crucial tool for information retrieval, Google is widely used by online marketing professionals, websites, and eCommerce platforms. Its search technology relies on sophisticated algorithms that assess factors like content relevance, link quality, and page structure.
However, its immense popularity could also be a disadvantage, as competition for organic or paid ranking becomes intense. Securing top positions on the results page is challenging, requiring significant effort and resources.
Though its market share is 4.16% (a slight improvement from 3.2% in November 2023), Bing, owned by Microsoft, is a popular search engine integrated with Microsoft Office Outlook and other services. Its performance has greatly improved with the addition of generative artificial intelligence, and Bing Chat ranks among the three most-used conversational AI chats, alongside ChatGPT and Gemini.
Additionally, it offers a rewards program where users can earn points and receive gifts by interacting with the platform.
Yandex retains third place in the rankings and has increased its market share from 1.78% in November 2023 to 2.8% currently.
This search engine is extensively used in Russia and has gained popularity for its ability to function in both English and Russian. Besides its presence in Russia, Yandex has audiences in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Turkey. Its success is partly due to accommodating the complex Cyrillic alphabet from its inception.
With around 30 million monthly users, its investment in innovation and presence in many countries of the former Soviet Union earns it a spot among today’s best search engines. If you run an eCommerce or other business and seek a presence in Russia, Yandex is a must-consider option.
Yahoo! remains a fixture, with a minor increase in market share from 1.22% in November 2023 to 1.33% in October this year. Although far from its dominance in the 1990s, it still holds a notable position on the web and continues to be used by millions worldwide 29 years after its creation (1995).
Notably, Yahoo Answers, one of its well-known services, shut down in late 2021, leaving behind a variety of well-ranked questions and answers on Google, as well as some of the best internet memes.
Yahoo! has aimed to be many things, from a news portal to email and a financial aggregator, resulting in various changes throughout its history.
Baidu, established in 2000, is a Chinese technology company that focuses on internet services. As the most popular search engine in China, it currently has a global market share of 0.83%, which is slightly less than the 0.93% it had in 2023. Much like Google, Baidu primarily functions in Mandarin and is a key player in online search within Asia.
Google’s conflicts with the Chinese government and its policies have hindered its attempts to penetrate the Asian market.

The list doesn’t stop here; there are numerous search engines like DuckDuckGo, Ask, Naver, Ecosia, AOL, Startpage, MetaGer, etc.
While many of these aren’t among the most popular search engines globally, it’s worthwhile to explore their features, characteristics, and interfaces. Ultimately, it’s about recognizing the diverse options available for web browsing.
Having identified the most widely used search engines globally, let’s now look at the main web browsers people use to connect online, based on updated data as of October 2024 from Statcounter:
As expected, just as Google dominates search engines, its Chrome browser leads on a global scale. Statcounter data indicates that Chrome holds an estimated 66.68% market share, up from November 2023, when it was at 63.17%.
Since its launch in 2008, this proprietary browser has become one of the most favored by internet users, thanks to its extensive range of applications and extensions. Being part of the Google suite, it offers significant interaction between its various products, enhancing user experience.
Safari is a high-speed web browser developed by Apple Inc. and was launched in 2003. As typical for Apple, it is designed exclusively for use with the company’s products, such as Macs and iPhones. However, between 2007 and 2012, it was available for Windows users.
According to Statcounter, Safari is the second most used web browser worldwide, with an 18.09% market share (down slightly from November 2023, when it held 19.9%). Safari is distinguished by its seamless interaction across devices via Apple account synchronization. It also stands out among browsers for its security features, reducing tracking risks and other malicious activities while browsing.
Everyone is familiar with Internet Explorer, a giant from the early internet era that was Microsoft’s flagship in the browser market. Microsoft Edge is the updated version of this now-obsolete browser and currently has a 5.25% market share, slightly down from November 2023, when it was 5.46%. Like the browsers mentioned before, it excels in device interaction through synchronization with Outlook accounts. It also integrates well with various Microsoft products like Office 365, Microsoft Teams, etc.
Generally, it is the default browser on Windows-operated devices, though it is often used primarily to download more popular ones like Chrome.
Launched in 2002, Firefox was a major competitor alongside Internet Explorer in the early days of web browsing at the onset of Chrome. Unlike the others, this browser operates as open-source, offering more transparency to users and greater development interaction.
Despite its past dominance in this ecosystem, Firefox now holds only 2.65% of the global browsing share. Nonetheless, it remains relevant and continues to be a favorite for users who appreciate its open-source nature and customization capabilities.
Samsung Internet moved up from sixth to fifth place on the list, overtaking Opera, despite experiencing a decline in its market share, dropping from 2.33% in November 2023 to 2.23% in October 2024.
This is a mobile web browser that, in 2012, replaced the standard Android browser on Samsung Galaxy devices. Over time, it has been made available on more devices and has introduced features such as Secret Mode, content cards, floating video, web push notifications, service workers, custom tabs, a content blocker extension, payment support, among others. In 2015, Samsung Internet was added to Google Play, making it accessible to a wider range of users.
Key features of this browser include Secret Mode for private browsing, biometric web login for enhanced security, and an integrated ad blocker. Moreover, it allows users to customize the location of the menu and address bar, and offers features like Video Assistant for easier multimedia content playback, as well as handy extensions like an integrated translator.

Naturally, the list does not stop at these six, as there’s a wide variety of browsers like Opera, Brave, Android Internet, UC Browser, IE, etc…
However, these mentioned do not collectively account for more than 1% of the global browsing market share, placing them far behind those we’ve previously listed.
