Throughout the history of social media, various platforms have become essential platforms for brands and influencers who want to reach a wider audience, promote products, create like-minded communities, improve engagement and increase conversions, among other benefits. Networks such as Instagram, TikTok and Linkedin host information of interest to different target audiences and in each of them the use of hashtags is essential to stand out.
Hashtags are very helpful elements to ensure that the content published, whether in feed, stories or reels, have more visibility and better positioning. By including a hashtag related to the topic of a particular post, Instagram’s algorithm, for example, can take it into account and will make it appear among the first places in the search displayed when clicking on that hashtag.
The Digital 2024 Report prepared by We Are Social in collaboration with Meltwater, which has such interesting data as you will see below: the 40 most popular hashtags on Instagramk, TikTok and LinkedIn around the world since the beginning of these apps.
As in the previous year, the Top 10 had no major variations. All the hashtags, except one, remained in the list, but with a slight change in their positions. The most significant changes in the top are the inclusion of the hashtag “travel” in the 10th position and the departure of “beautiful” which occupied the eighth place in 2023. This could indicate an increase in the trend of sharing travel experiences and destinations, something that may also be reflected in the fact that “nature” moved up from ninth to eighth place.
On the other hand, there is a change in the use of the hashtag “instagram”, which moved from fifth place in 2023 to third place in 2024. Although the hashtags “fashion” and “photooftheday” remain in the Top 10 in both years, there is a change in their position. In 2023, “fashion” was in third place, while in 2024 it drops to fourth. On the other hand, “photooftheday” moves from fourth to fifth place.
Here you can see the rest of the top 40:
If we analyze the history of TikTok, #FYP remains as the hashtag that accumulates the most views, since it refers to the “For your page” section of the app, specifically the total number of publications that have used this hashtag accumulated, between all of them, 55.41 billion views, which is much higher than the almost 35 billion of the previous year. Appearing in this TikTok selection can be a boost to your content metrics. In fact, this desire of content creators is reaffirmed by the fact that #ForYou remains in the number two spot and #Viral climbed from number four to three with 21.68 billion views.
#FYPシ and #ForYouPage are in fourth and fifth place respectively. The former had not entered the top 10 in the previous year, while the latter was in third place, but has been displaced by #Viral. #ParaTi debuts in the list occupying the sixth position, which the previous year was occupied by #Trending, which in 2024 drops to tenth position. Meanwhile, #TikTok drops from fifth to seventh place. The great popularity of this type of hashtags reaffirms the fact that users of the platform seek to make their content reach as many people as possible through the algorithms of the video social network.
Another new addition to the top 10 is #CapCut, which is ranked #8 with 6.11 billion views. CapCut is a video editing app for mobile devices developed by ByteDance, the same company behind TikTok. The app is known for its variety of accessible and easy-to-use video editing tools, which has made it a popular choice among TikTok content creators, and pre-designed templates for video editing can be accessed from the social network.
LinkedIn, the professional social network par excellence, kept the hashtag #India in first place as the most followed hashtag, with a total of 67 million followers, slightly lower than the 67.3 million posts in 2023.
And, surprisingly, the entire top 10 remained exactly the same as presented in 2023.
