Google has decided that having an assistant that simply answers questions is no longer enough. Now, it wants Gemini to actually do things for you. Review emails, summarize meetings, create documents, automate workflows, and even manage recurring processes in the background while you do something else entirely (or pretend to be productive on a video call).
And yes, marketer, you have probably heard this same claim far too many times over the past year, but those were the other big tech company. Or the other. Or the other.
At Google I/O 2026, the company unveiled a long list of updates. One of them is Gemini Spark, a new artificial intelligence agent that marks a major shift in Gemini’s strategy: moving from a conversational chatbot to something closer to a “digital employee” connected to your work ecosystem. And yes, the idea sounds very much like science fiction, but at this point, saying that does not really mean much anymore.
Until now, Gemini has mainly functioned as a traditional AI assistant: questions, answers, content generation, and some automation. With Spark, Google wants to move decisively into the world of AI agents, one of the tech industry’s current obsessions.
According to Google, Spark runs on Gemini 3.5 and uses the Antigravity harness system, an architecture that allows it to operate in the cloud and continue carrying out tasks even when the user closes their laptop or locks their phone.
In other words: the AI keeps working even when you sign off.
The proposition closely resembles the vision that OpenAI, Microsoft, and Anthropic have been pushing for months: assistants capable of autonomously executing complex actions, connected to multiple tools, and equipped with contextual memory.
The difference is that Google has something the others do not: its Workspace ecosystem. Spark is deeply integrated with tools such as Gmail, Google Docs, and Slides, which allows it to automate tasks that many people still perform manually every day.

Yes, Google basically wants to turn everyday digital chaos into something at least somewhat manageable.
And while many of these functions can already be partially handled through traditional automation, the difference here is the contextual and conversational component: Spark does not follow technical rules, but rather instructions given in natural language.

One of the most interesting points, and also the most delicate, is that Spark works as a persistent cloud-based agent.
That means you do not need to keep a window open or manually launch every task. The system can continue running processes autonomously under certain conditions or triggers. For example: recurring tasks, conditional automations, complete workflows, and the creation of custom subagents.
Although it is also worth remembering that giving continuous access to your email, documents, calendar, and personal processes requires a very high level of technological trust.
Aware of this, Google repeatedly emphasizes that Spark works “under your direction”.
The company says that users decide which apps to connect, can turn Spark on or off whenever they want, and that the AI will ask for confirmation before carrying out sensitive actions such as sending emails or spending money.
Because asking an AI to draft a piece of text is one thing, and letting it actively operate inside your digital life is something else entirely.
And that is where Google still has a lot of users to convince.
Another key point is the expansion of external integrations through MCP connections.
Google has confirmed initial integrations with Canva, the major design platform; OpenTable, the restaurant discovery app; and Instacart, the grocery delivery app that lets you have your monthly shopping delivered right to your door. Plus a long list of partners set to arrive soon.
In this example, Google shows how, because it is connected to Workspace, Spark knows that the user has to bring snacks to tomorrow’s t-ball game and sends a notification explaining what it has added to their Instacart cart.

The idea is that Spark will not just work inside Workspace, but will also be able to interact with external services to complete real-world tasks: bookings, shopping, design, organization, and more. In other words, the classic model of “open this app to do this” could gradually begin to disappear in favor of agents that simply carry out actions on our behalf.
A very convenient scenario… and also a potentially unsettling one.
The Spark announcement makes one trend quite clear: the AI race is entering a new phase. The focus is no longer only on generating text, images, or clever responses. Now the competition is about creating agents capable of acting, automating, coordinating tools, and executing complex end-to-end tasks.
And here Google has an obvious strategic advantage: billions of users already live inside Gmail, Calendar, Docs, or Drive.
If it manages to integrate Spark in a way that is genuinely useful, rather than turning it into yet another experimental feature that people disable after three days, it could be very well positioned for the next generation of AI assistants. That said, this is still an early-stage rollout.
Google has confirmed that trusted testers will start trying Spark this week, and the Beta will arrive next week for U.S. users subscribed to Google AI Ultra.
In addition, it will also arrive in the Gemini desktop app over the summer, enabling users to work with local files and automate tasks directly on their computer.
