Google reveals its plans for advertising in AI Mode: this is how the future of search ads will be

In the leaked documents, Google explains to brands the keys to effective advertising in the new conversational era of AI Mode.

Google continues to advance the evolution of its search engine with the introduction of AI Mode, which is already available in several key markets such as the United States, United Kingdom, and India. This new approach marks a before and after in how users interact with information and, of course, in the ways brands engage in advertising.

Now, thanks to information provided directly by Google, we have gained a greater understanding of how it envisions the future of advertising within search engines.

Google’s vision of advertising in AI Mode

In documents leaked by AdAge, Google reminds agencies that AI Mode is not merely an AI chat; it is a conversational search experience designed to provide complete, easy-to-understand, and context-rich answers. Unlike traditional search, where results appear as a list of links, AI Mode delivers detailed responses that address longer and more complex queries.

Initial data from Google indicates that users are asking questions that are two to three times longer than conventional searches, which demonstrates a clear intention to explore and delve deeper into topics.

Of course, the major question for brands is how advertisements will fit into this new dynamic. Google has been explicit: advertising will remain a fundamental part of the experience, but its nature and function will evolve. Rather than serving as a mere link, an advertisement will be integrated as a relevant solution within the AI-generated response.

The advertisement formats that Google has identified as critical for this transition include:

  • Text Ads: These will be displayed when a user’s query reflects a clear purchase intent.
  • Shopping Ads: Essential for product-related queries, these ads will be seamlessly and visually integrated into the AI’s response.
  • Performance Max (PMax) Campaigns: These will be the principal tool, as their automated nature and conversion-focused approach are particularly well-suited to this AI-driven search environment.

Additionally, Google highlights three key moments for brands in this new ecosystem:

  • Participating in the user’s exploration phase: Brands have the opportunity to appear during the initial stages of the purchase funnel, when users are still researching and considering possibilities. AI can better predict the user’s intent, thus enabling advertisers to be part of the ongoing conversation.
  • Becoming the next logical step: Once the user’s purchase intent is clear, the advertisement should represent the “next natural step.” For example, if a user inquires about “the best running shoes,” an ad for an athletic footwear brand will be integrated as a relevant purchase option.
  • Connecting with new, previously unexplored intents: Google’s AI is capable of detecting and predicting intentions that were previously imperceptible through traditional search. This opens the door to new opportunities for brands to connect with consumers during unexpected moments of truth.

In this context, Google’s recommendations focus on automation and data quality. Thus, according to the company, employing broad match in search campaigns and adopting Performance Max are essential. These tools enable Google’s algorithms to find the right audience without relying on exact keywords, an approach that will be even more important in a conversational search environment.

Furthermore, Google emphasizes the importance of optimizing the product feed and explains that for retailers, “feed hygiene” is critical. A comprehensive, up-to-date, and high-quality product feed is essential for Shopping ads to be displayed effectively in AI-generated responses.
