Gmail enters the Gemini era: is the end of the traditional inbox?

One of the significant innovations is AI Inbox, which allows for breaking the chronological order to reorganize messages according to their actual relevance.

With email volumes reaching historic highs, Google, the company behind one of the most popular email solutions, has determined that the solution is not for us to spend more time trying to better organize our messages, but rather to allow artificial intelligence to autonomously decide which messages are most relevant to you. Today’s announcement marks the beginning of the Gemini Era in Gmail, a transformation that integrates the Gemini 3 model directly into the very core of the platform, turning it into a proactive assistant capable of understanding each of its (almost) 3 billion users’ personal contexts.

AI Overviews

The most disruptive change is reflected in the new search capability. Up to now, finding a specific piece of information could be quite a cumbersome affair, in many ways requiring the user to be an expert in filters and keywords. With the arrival of AI Overviews in the inbox, the process is simplified through the use of natural language.

In this way, Gmail’s search function ceases to be a keyword tracker, transforming instead into an answers engine; the user no longer searches for an email but rather asks Gemini for a specific piece of information, such as a quote from a supplier or a particular date, and the AI extracts the information after analyzing years of history. As the official announcement explains: “Instead of searching for keywords or reviewing a year’s worth of emails, simply use natural language, such as ‘Who was the plumber that gave me the quote for the bathroom renovation last year?’.”

AI Inbox, the content curator for your inbox

This capability is further enhanced by the launch of AI Inbox, an interface that, for the first time, breaks the chronological order to allow users to reorganize messages based on their true relevance. Unlike the former category tabs, this system can infer who our “VIPs” are and which tasks are critical, presenting them in a daily briefing that previously did not exist on the platform.

“AI Inbox is like having a personalized report that highlights pending tasks and keeps you up to date with what truly matters. It assists you in prioritizing, identifying your VIP contacts based on indicators such as the people you email frequently, contacts from your list, and relationships it can infer from the content of your messages,” explains Google.

For marketing professionals, this new ecosystem represents a considerable challenge. The success of an email marketing campaign will no longer depend solely on overcoming traditional spam filters, a technology that Google already mastered, but now requires that the new Gemini algorithm deems the content valuable enough to elevate it to the AI Inbox’s priority summary. If the AI does not detect a real relationship or immediate value for the user, the promotional email may be relegated to a much deeper background than the current “Promotions” tab.

New versions of already existing tools

On the other hand, this announcement also includes the substantial improvement of tools that were already familiar. This is the case for Help Me Write and suggested replies. Although both features were present in earlier versions, according to Google, the leap to the Gemini 3 engine will cause them to cease being mere templates and instead transform into drafts that faithfully mimic the user’s style and tone, while also integrating context from other Google ecosystem applications. Similarly, thread summaries, which were previously a function exclusive to enterprise environments or beta versions, have now been optimized and democratized, becoming a free tool for the global user base.

Additionally, the introduction of Proofread as a new premium feature adds a layer of editorial sophistication that was previously nonexistent, allowing Pro and Ultra-level subscribers to refine their communications with a professional level of grammatical and stylistic precision. This tool acts as a professional style editor, adjusting tone and grammar to prevent errors in critical communications.

Availability and rollout

Regarding its availability and the anticipated launch in Spain, the rollout of these features has been structured in phases to ensure the stability of the new Gemini 3 model. As of today, users in the United States already have free access to thread summaries and the Help Me Write and suggested reply features. In the same market, the most advanced capabilities, such as direct queries with AI Overviews and the Proofread style editor, are reserved exclusively for subscribers to the Google AI Pro and Ultra tiers. For its part, the AI Inbox interface remains in a more restricted phase, available only to the “Trusted Testers” group within the United States.

Google has confirmed that, although the initial launch is in English and limited to the United States, expansion to additional languages and regions will occur progressively throughout 2026.

How will this affect email marketing?

This evolution—this “Gemini era” in Gmail—raises a difficult question: what will happen to traditional performance metrics? With the advent of automatic summaries and intelligent filtering, the open rate risks becoming a vanity metric, one we continue to track out of habit or mere satisfaction, yet which no longer provides truly valuable information about campaign behavior. If a user obtains all the necessary information from a newsletter through the summary generated by Gemini, without ever clicking into the message itself, brand impact is maintained, but behavioral tracking is lost.

This is similar to what is currently occurring with AI Overviews and AI Mode in the traditional SEO ecosystem.

Brands no longer compete only with one another for consumer attention; now they must also overcome an algorithmic interpretation layer that decides which parts of their message are worthy of being read.

In this scenario, the content strategy must pivot towards ultraspecialization. Should Gemini 3 prove capable of prioritizing emails based on the relevance of the relationship, success will fall to those brands that are identified by AI as trusted contacts, compelling marketing departments to cultivate smaller but far more deeply engaged communities.

In any event, it is important to clarify that these changes from Google are not a punishment for marketing; rather, they introduce an algorithmic mediation layer that ensures only content perceived as relevant rises to the surface. The impact will not be immediate but instead structural over the medium term, resulting in a new Gmail that not only cleans up visual clutter but also acts as a quality judge, forcing communicators to be more human, more direct, and, above all, truly indispensable.
