Meta is aware that Facebook is not the favorite social network of Generation Z, but it is determined to begin changing that. At the Facebook IRL event in Austin, the tech company announced various updates that will redefine the experience on the social network, with the goal of attracting young users.

Primarily, the Facebook updates revolve around local community information, video content, and Facebook Groups. In addition, other products like Facebook Dating and Messenger also present new features.

Discover local content of interest in a single tab

One of the key uses that users give to Facebook is connecting with their local communities. This is why the platform has begun integrating a new tab called “Local” which allows users to more easily discover local content from Marketplace, Groups, and Events in a single space.

For now, this tab is in the testing phase and is only active in certain areas of the United States: Austin, New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco, and Phoenix.

On the other hand, a Weekly and Weekend Summary for Events is also being introduced. This is a compilation of event recommendations based on the user’s interests, which will be sent to them weekly via a notification.

Additionally, a new sliding section has been launched in the Feed that highlights the best content on the social network related to your area. This will be particularly useful, as Meta explains, for instance, if you move to a new neighborhood: “in this new section, we can show you local events, interesting groups, people, businesses, items for sale, all to help you connect with more people and discover information that helps you take the next step in your new community.”

A more personalized way to explore

Facebook is also testing a new “Explore” tab, where you can discover content aligned with your interests, delve deeper into them, and find entertainment. The posts each person sees in this section will be fully personalized thanks to the algorithm.

Whether you are looking for time management tips, advice for traveling abroad for the first time, DIY tricks to repurpose furniture, or marathon training groups, the Explore tab will have even more of what you are looking for,” Meta explains.

New video tab and full-screen player

Knowing that video is a format that is popular among users in general and especially among younger audiences, Facebook has focused its renewal efforts on this aspect. Young adults spend nearly 60% of their time on the platform watching videos, and over half of them watch Reels daily.

To address this, Facebook has announced that it will soon introduce an updated “Video” tab, making it easier for people to discover Reels, videos, and live streams that interest them.

In addition to this new tab, the platform will include full-screen video playback. This will provide a more fluid and immersive viewing experience.

Invitations to events via SMS, email, and Instagram

Recently, Meta’s social network introduced a new feature that allows users to invite their Instagram followers to events they have created on Facebook. Additionally, it enables sending invitations via SMS and email, making it easier for anyone to view and confirm their attendance at an event, whether or not they are on Facebook.

An AI assistant in Groups

Facebook Groups is one of the platform’s standout features. Currently, there are 25 million active public groups each month, and nearly 1.8 billion people use Groups monthly. Given these figures and the potential frustration of answering repetitive questions every time a new user joins a Group and seeks key information, Facebook has begun testing a new AI-based tool.

If the Group administrator chooses to activate this function, whenever a new member joins, they can open a chat with the Group’s AI assistant to ask any questions they may have and access relevant posts within the Group. For now, this AI is only being integrated in the United States and Canada for a small number of selected Groups.

Matchmaker arrives on Facebook Dating

According to Facebook, conversations in Facebook Dating, its feature that uses your network and interests to help you find romantic connections, have increased by 24% year over year among young adult users in the United States and Canada.

To continue boosting the use of Facebook Dating, the social network has just introduced Matchmaker, a tool that allows you to invite up to five friends to help choose potential matches for you. It is a way to involve your friends in the process of finding someone special.

Updates in Messenger

Notes and Memories

The Notes feature was introduced in Messenger at the beginning of 2024 as a quick and simple way to share how you are feeling. Now, new updates are being added, such as the ability to include music or mentions, and this format is being tested on Facebook as well.

Additionally, the Memories feature is being introduced in Messenger, allowing users to relive and reshare moments that were previously posted. “Memories in Messenger bring up old photos from your chats for you to view and share with your community.”

Start creating Communities in Messenger

Meta has just announced Messenger Communities, a feature that enables small and medium-sized communities to connect through shared interests. Users can create multiple chats based on specific topics to help organize and facilitate conversations within a larger community.

“Simple, pre-designed tools will make it easy to manage and moderate your community, without the need to create a Facebook Group. Growing your community is easy by inviting your Facebook friends or using your community’s shareable QR code,” explains Meta.

Developing more AI

Regarding the integration of AI into its platform, Facebook has recently made several advancements. A few weeks ago, it introduced its tool “Imagine,” which is now accessible through the Feed, Stories composer, and profile page.

Additionally, the company highlights that, earlier this year, it launched AI-Powered Comment Summaries in public Groups, Pages, and for creators. This feature helps users stay up to date with conversations and content more easily.

More support for creators

Another significant update is the launch of a new monetization program for creators, expanding opportunities for them to earn through various content formats. Meta is also planning to test monetization options for Stories in the upcoming months.
