If you are one of the early adopters of online shopping, the name DHgate might sound familiar to you. It is a Chinese marketplace founded in 2004 that had its peak during those years but was later overshadowed by other giants like Amazon, AliExpress, Shein, Temu, etc.

It turns out that the platform has received a significant boost this last month, to the point where it broke into the top 10 most downloaded apps in Spain and the United Kingdom, among other countries, while in the United States, it rose from 352nd to second place in the App Store in just one day (last April 10th).

You might wonder why. In this article, we explain the reasons for this resurgence (spoiler: TikTok and Donald Trump are largely responsible) and tell you the story of this Asian eCommerce site, which boasts over 37 million products, offers competitive prices, and has earned the trust of consumers.

What is DHgate

Founded in 2004 in Beijing, China, DHgate was created with the objective of connecting international sellers and buyers, especially for B2B (Business to Business) and B2C (Business to Consumer) transactions. Since its inception, the platform has facilitated access to wholesale products at competitive prices, attracting a wide range of users, both businesses and consumers. Over the years, the site has grown tremendously, expanding its presence in markets such as the United States, Latin America, Russia, and Europe.

While anyone can purchase through the platform, DHgate has a special appeal for SMEs, as it offers dropshipping services and assists them in their internationalization process by handling aspects such as store operations, marketing, payments, warehousing and logistics, customer service, risk control, guarantees, import taxes, inspection and customs shipping, training, etc.

Here is what you can find on DHgate

From a buyer’s perspective, the marketplace offers an enormous variety of products—from well-known brands to lesser-known ones—ranging from electronics and fashion to home and beauty items:

  • Electronics: smartphones, cameras, gadgets, and electronic accessories.
  • Fashion and accessories: clothing, footwear, jewelry, and luxury items.
  • Home and garden: furniture, decorative items, and outdoor equipment.
  • Health and beauty: cosmetics, personal care products, fitness equipment.
  • Toys and hobbies: from educational toys to collectibles.

DHgate Interface

But one of the main attractions of DHgate is its considerably low prices, achieved through its network of manufacturers and wholesale suppliers. This attracts both small entrepreneurs and buyers interested in acquiring products at reduced prices, especially when they are purchased in large quantities.

How to buy from DHgate

The purchasing process on DHgate is quite straightforward. Users must create an account on the website or mobile app, and then they can start exploring products by categories or through the search bar. Once products are selected, buyers can view details such as descriptions, prices, shipping options, and reviews from other buyers.

The payment process is secure and varied, with options such as credit card, PayPal, and bank transfers. DHgate also offers a buyer protection system, which guarantees that products are delivered as agreed, and otherwise, the buyer can receive a refund. Additionally, users can track their orders through the platform to ensure their purchases arrive on time.

Advantages of DHgate

While DHgate competes with heavyweights, its platform offers advantages that combine the best of Amazon with the best of platforms like Temu or AliExpress, but with more experience in the B2B sector:

  • Focus on wholesale trade: while other platforms primarily focus on retail sales, DHgate specializes in wholesale trade, attracting businesses and entrepreneurs looking to purchase large quantities at low prices.
  • Competitive prices: the direct connection with suppliers in China allows it to offer products at prices well below those of other platforms. This has been particularly relevant for consumers in the United States, where higher tariffs on Chinese products have made DHgate a more economical option.
  • Variety of products: in addition to products from well-known brands, DHgate also sells items from less known brands or exclusive products, offering users a wider range of options at attractive prices.
  • Buyer protection: it features a guarantee system where buyers can request refunds if products do not arrive in proper condition or are not what they expected.

Why DHgate Became one of the most downloaded apps

As we explained at the beginning, in recent weeks, downloads of the DHgate app have skyrocketed in various countries, including Spain, where it is currently in 5th place (up 735 positions) among the most downloaded apps, according to the site Data.ai:

This surge in popularity can be explained by two factors: on one hand, the impact of the tariffs imposed on Chinese products in the United States has led many buyers to seek more economical alternatives to access quality products, especially those from luxury brands, at lower prices.

On the other hand, several users of TikTok have started uploading videos of purchases made on the platform, offering tips on how to buy with free shipping, comparing prices with other more expensive sites, and even conducting a comparative analysis between DHgate and its direct competitor, Alibaba, explaining why it is better to shop on DHgate:

Moreover, other viral videos have circulated on this social network, revealing that many luxury products are manufactured in China and sold at elevated prices in the West, generating interest in acquiring these products directly from their country of origin.

In this video, for example, a user shows how she has purchased products from well-known brands such as Louis Vuitton and Prada through DHgate at prices much lower than if she had acquired them through these stores, assuring that they are originals:

In this other post, a buyer from the United Kingdom shows an unboxing of New Balance sneakers that she bought on DHgate for only 37 pounds ($47.92 USD):

Is DHgate a reliable platform?

A few years ago, DHgate had quality issues with some sellers and the proliferation of counterfeit products. However, the platform has implemented strict policies to ensure that the products sold meet quality standards, resulting in improved trust from both buyers and sellers.

Currently, the marketplace has the “Brand Protection Alliance Program,” designed to protect brands against counterfeiting and other intellectual property issues on its platform. Such programs help sellers and brands maintain control over their products, offering tools to detect and remove counterfeit listings and protect their online reputation. This also indirectly helps protect the buyer from acquiring fake products.
