The feedback Google has been receiving from its users regarding AI Overviews has been overwhelmingly positive, prompting the tech giant to expand access to this search technology to over a hundred countries and additional languages.
AI Overviews launched in May 2024 in the United States in English, and in August, began rolling out in Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, each with support in local languages. Now, the tool will reach over 100 new regions; however, Spain and other European Union countries are not included in the list of locations where this generative search tool will expand.
Another significant development Google announced is that those with access to AI Overview will be able to use it in any language currently supported by the AI tool, regardless of their location. For instance, a user in the United States who speaks Japanese will be able to view AI Overview results in Japanese.
According to Google, following this latest expansion, AI Overview is expected to serve over 1 billion users globally each month.
Google has been refining how it presents source links for each piece of information in the AI Overview previews. Earlier this month, Google introduced an update that integrates links directly into the text generated by AI.
As a result, the company has observed an increase in traffic to the websites cited, compared to the previous link display format.
Additionally, ads will continue to appear clearly marked and in specific locations, ensuring that users can easily distinguish between organic and sponsored content. In the United States, ads in AI Overviews are now available on mobile devices for relevant queries.
One thing is clear, Google is betting on AI.
