Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI join Linux to establish the Agentic AI Foundation

The objective is to create a neutral and open foundation to ensure that AI agents evolve in a transparent and collaborative manner.
December 10, 2025

The Linux Foundation has announced the establishment of the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), a workspace that combines cutting-edge technology and open-source governance to shape the future of open and accessible AI.

This initiative benefits from the collaboration of leading technical projects, including Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), Block’s goose, and OpenAI’s AGENTS.md. In addition, the foundation brings together a group of Platinum members that could be considered the industry’s “dream team”: Amazon Web Services, Anthropic, Block, Bloomberg, Cloudflare, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.

According to Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation, we are entering a new era of AI in which autonomous agents are capable of coordinating and working together. “In just one year, MCP, AGENTS.md, and goose have become essential tools for developers building this new generation of agent technologies,” Zemlin notes.

In this vein, the executive emphasizes that integrating these projects under the AAIF umbrella allows them to scale with the transparency and stability that open governance provides: “The Linux Foundation is proud to serve as the neutral hub where the AI infrastructure upon which the world will depend will continue to be built.”

What is the AAIF

The AAIF is the new entity established by the Linux Foundation to serve as a neutral and open foundation in the development of agentic technologies: AI systems capable of acting, making decisions, and coordinating autonomously. The foundation is established with the aim of becoming the central meeting point for standards, tools, and frameworks that allow these agents to evolve without becoming locked in closed ecosystems.

Its initial three projects already set the pace for where the sector is headed:

  • MCP (Model Context Protocol): the “common language” for connecting AI models with tools, applications, and data.
  • goose: a local, open-source framework for creating structured and reliable agents.
  • AGENTS.md: a universal Markdown standard that offers coding agents a clear and consistent guide for working across different repositories.

The concept is simple but ambitious: if AI agents are to become an essential part of how we work—in code, design, operations, or automation—they will require shared rules and a common infrastructure that provides confidence for both enterprises and developers.

Linux is the worldwide benchmark for open and collaborative development. Its projects, such as Linux, Kubernetes, OpenChain, OpenSearch, OpenSSF, OpenStack, PyTorch, Ray, RISC-V, SPDX, and Zephyr, form the foundation of global infrastructure.

MCP, goose, and AGENTS.md: the triad powering the new foundation

MCP: from internal project to universal standard

Launched by Anthropic in 2024, MCP began as an internal solution and ultimately scaled to become the industry standard protocol for connecting AI systems with tools and data. Today, more than 10,000 MCP servers are in operation across all types of environments: from Fortune 500 companies to the most widely used AI platforms such as Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.

Mike Krieger, Chief Product Officer at Anthropic, explains that donating MCP to the AAIF ensures it will remain open and neutral in the long term, especially now that it has become a critical part of the sector’s infrastructure.

Goose: block’s commitment to secure and controlled agents

Goose, launched in 2025, is the initiative from Block—the company behind Square, Cash App, Afterpay, TIDAL, and several Bitcoin projects—to build a robust, extensible framework based on MCP that enables the development of more reliable local agents.

According to Manik Surtani, Head of Open Source at Block, we are at a pivotal moment: the AI that will define the next decade could either remain open or become trapped within proprietary architectures. “By contributing goose, we are ensuring that agent-based AI continues to be shaped by the community and driven by merit. Together, we are building the infrastructure for a future of AI that benefits everyone,” he states.

AGENTS.md: ensuring predictable agent behavior

OpenAI introduced AGENTS.md in August 2025 as a response to a very common issue for thousands of developers: inconsistency. Each project has its own structure, rules, and tools, and agents must understand these variables to work effectively. AGENTS.md makes agent behavior far more predictable across various repositories and build systems.

This technology has already been adopted by over 60,000 open-source projects and agent frameworks, including Amp, Codex, Cursor, Devin, Factory, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, Jules, and VS Code, among others.

“By co-founding the AAIF and donating AGENTS.md, we are helping to establish open and transparent practices that make the development of AI agents more predictable, interoperable, and secure,” states Nick Cooper, a technical team member at OpenAI.

An alliance driving the industry forward

In addition to the Platinum members, the foundation includes a long list of Gold and Silver members:

  • Gold Members: Adyen, Arcade.dev, Cisco, Datadog, Docker, Ericsson, IBM, JetBrains, Okta, Oracle, Runlayer, Salesforce, SAP, Shopify, Snowflake, Temporal, Tetrate, and Twilio Inc.
  • Silver Members: Apify, Chronosphere, Cosmonic, Elasticsearch, Eve Security, Hugging Face, Kubermatic, KYXStart, LanceDB, Mirantis, NinjaTech AI, Obot.ai, Prefect.io, Pydantic, Shinkai.com, Solo.io, Spectro Cloud, Stacklok, SUSE, Uber, WorkOS, Zapier, and ZED.

The AAIF will also host key events such as the MCP Developer Summit 2026, which will be held in New York on April 2 and 3, featuring a format that combines technical sessions, workshops, and community participation.
