In recent months, the digital world has engaged in considerable speculation regarding the possibility that OpenAI would opt to integrate advertising as a natural evolution and a means of generating revenue. Now, the developer has just confirmed these suspicions by announcing that it will soon begin displaying ChatGPT ads in the United States for Free and Go plans.
OpenAI has stated that the advertisements will be clearly identified and differentiated from ChatGPT’s organic responses and that these responses will not be influenced by the ads. The technology company is aware that the line separating users’ trust in the chatbot from concerns about potential advertising influences is exceedingly thin, which is why they have shared a list of the principles that will govern this new era within ChatGPT.
By building its advertising platform from scratch, OpenAI has the advantage of being able to tailor it and, according to its statements, align its objectives with its commitment to user trust, consistently placing users first. Based on this, the technology company has published its five key principles concerning advertising:
The United States will serve as the testing ground for ChatGPT’s new advertising experience. In the coming weeks, users aged 18 and over who log in within the United States on a Free or Go plan will begin to encounter advertisements within their conversations with the artificial intelligence.
Advertisements will appear at the end of the responses generated by ChatGPT when the system determines they are relevant to the ongoing conversation with the chatbot. For instance, if you are asking for recipe ideas for an Italian-themed party, the AI may insert an advertisement from an Italian pasta brand. Advertisements will be labeled as such and presented in shaded blocks.
Furthermore, OpenAI explains that: “You will be able to learn more about why you are seeing an ad or dismiss it and provide feedback on your decision. During this testing phase, we will not display advertisements in accounts where the user indicates they do not wish to see them, or in cases where we estimate the user is under 18 years of age, and we will avoid placing advertisements near sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health, or politics.”
This new scenario presents a significant opportunity for brands of all sizes. Those who play their cards right can position themselves within a highly valuable showcase that will sponsor their products or services in contexts where they are relevant and where the user is most receptive. “Advertisements may also make a difference for small businesses and emerging brands looking to compete. Artificial intelligence helps level the playing field, allowing anyone to create high-quality experiences that help people discover options they might never have encountered otherwise,” notes the technology company.
Looking ahead, the technology company has announced its intention to allow individuals to open an advertisement and ask questions about the advertised product or service in order to obtain more details before making a purchasing decision. “Conversational interfaces open up possibilities for people to go beyond static messages and links.”
Once advertisements begin to appear in ChatGPT, OpenAI will collect feedback from users in order to continue refining and developing this new business model. “We will learn from user feedback and adjust the manner in which advertisements are displayed over time; however, our commitment to putting users first and maintaining their trust will remain unchanged.”
